Quarterback

The Fanatics Starts of the Week

Matt Ryan (ATL) vs TB

I know Matt Ryan is a little banged up these days, but x-rays came back negative on his foot and his matchup against the Buccaneers is too good to pass up this week. Currently, the Bucs are dead last in passing yards allowed per game at 370, passing touchdowns per game at 3.25, and fantasy points to quarterbacks at 35 plus. Obviously, that last one depends on the scoring system, which I used a generic standard scoring system for quarterbacks. So even on one good foot, I am expecting Matty Ice to deliver at least his season average of 320 plus yards and at least two touchdowns. To increase his appeal the game is in Atlanta this week were Matty Ice has been fantastic and should continue to be so this week.

Other Starts

The Fanatics Sits of the Week

Joe Flacco (BAL) @ TEN

Flacco is possibly going to have the best year of his career. In fact, he is on pace to set career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. This week, however, going into Tennesse might be his biggest challenge yet this year. The Titans are in the top five in passing yards allowed and touchdowns allowed. This should prove to be more than Flacco can handle who had a hard time putting up points against the tough Browns defense this past week. Not that it should all fall on Flacco’s shoulder, Michael Crabtree has been a huge disappointment, and John Brown and Willie Snead are just not cut out for WR1 workloads. So until Crabtree steps up Flacco may find it hard to produce top quarterback fantasy numbers.

Running Back

The Fanatics Starts of the Week

Wendell Smallwood (PHI) @ NYG

I strongly believe at least one Eagles running back is going to have a very good game. It is either going to be Smallwood or Corey Clement. I am backing Smallwood here. He has been the healthiest, I think he is a better runner, and while Clement might be a better pass catcher Smallwood is very capable in the passing game as well. I am actually confused as to why Jay Ajayi has been playing ahead of either of these running backs for the record. Either way, Ajayi is IR and the team is talking about bringing in a back for depth and probably depending on how Thursday night goes will determine how good of a back they need to bring in. Which come Friday morning I think the Eagles will not be that concerned about getting a talented running back after Smallwood goes for 80 plus yards on the ground with another 30 through the air and at least one trip to pay dirt.

Other Starts

The Fanatics Sits of the Week

LeSean McCoy, fantasy footballLeSean McCoy (BUF) @ HOU

The Bills are not very good on offense this year and that is a fact. Then consider the age and mileage that McCoy has and you can’t really be surprised by how poorly he is performing this season. In four games he has 45 carries for only 170 yards and no touchdowns. Making matters worse is his 10 receptions for 64 yards in those games too. Even getting 26 total touches last week he could on muster 12.8 ppr points. If you have been holding out hope on McCoy I think it is time to move on, especially this week. Not only has McCoy been playing poorly he is facing a solid Texans defense that should make for a long day for any Bills offensive player. I would be surprised if McCoy rushing for over 50 yards or even gets over 75 total yards.

Other Sits

Wide Receiver

The Fanatics Starts of the Week

Tyler Lockett (SEA) @ OAK

While Lockett’s 20 receptions through five games are not all that impressive, he does have 347 yards and four touchdowns. So he is making the most of his touches. Normally that would make me shy away from a player, but I see Lockett being about to continue this streak at least in the short term. Plus if you are in a league that gives points for return yards he adds another 270 yards to his production. Even without the return yards, Lockett has been averaging 15.76 points per game in ppr, which have been pretty consistent most weeks. That is good enough to make Lockett at low-end WR2 and against a poor Raiders defense, I am looking for Lockett to bring in five receptions for 80 yards with a strong shot at a touchdown.

Other Starts

The Fanatics Sits of the Week

Keenan Allen (LAC) @ CLE

Chances are you might not be able to sit Allen, but if you are fortunate enough that you can afford to sit him I would strongly consider it. I am not sure how many people realize how good Denzel Ward is. The kid has been great this year. I know John Brown is not a stud like Allen is, but Ward pretty much followed Brown around a game last week held him to a season-low in points. Brown only caught four of 14 passes and Ward picked on off and defended three more. I think with Ward covering Allen all day he will struggle to find room to run and even harder to find the end zone. Also, consider Philip Rivers will not force the ball to a receiver the way Flacco did, so I am really expecting a reduction in opportunity for Allen this week. If he can manage eight or more targets he could turn that into five receptions for 60 yards.

Tight End

The Fanatics Starts of the Week

Niles Paul (JAX) @ DAL

Niles has always dealt with injuries but when he has been healthy and give an opportunity to play he has done well. At the start of the 2014 season in four games, he caught 21 passes for 313 yards and a touchdown. Pressed into duty last week he managed to catch seven passes on nine targets for 65 yards. Paul may not be a long-term solution, but he might be the best the Jags have going forward and can be very useful for owners looking for some cheap points from a position with not a lot of depth. Paul could end up with another game with over six receptions and 60 plus yards making him a strong candidate for a double-digit day.

Other Starts

The Fanatics Sits of the Week

Jared Cook (OAK) vs SEA

I have never been a Cook believer. He is usually good for one great game a year and a couple of solid ones to give people enough false hope only to be frustrated by him most of the year. This year he has had two really good games catching 17 of 25 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns. The other three games he caught 13 of 16 passes for 100 yards and zero touchdowns. Receptions are solid, but the yards and lack of touchdowns really hurt his value those weeks. A week against Seattle won’t be any easier for him either. I am thinking another week of four receptions for less than 30 yards and no end zone visits.

Other Sits

  • Evan Engram (NYG) vs PHI

Defense

The Fanatics Starts of the Week

Green Bay Packers vs SF

In two games C.J. Bethard has thrown four interceptions and fumbled three times losing two of them. As long as Clay Matthews does not get called for roughing the passer the Packers should be able to get to Bethard and create some turnovers.

Other Starts

  • Chicago Bears @ MIA

The Fanatics Sits of the Week

Denver Broncos @ LAR

The Rams score a lot. Jared Goff does not get sacked, he has thrown four interceptions, but that is not horrible when you consider how much offense the Rams have produced this year. So either way, sit the Broncos.

The Professor

I have been playing fantasy football since 1991. My first draft I had the first pick and the first player I ever drafted was Randall Cunningham. I remember that because he broke his leg in the first half of the season. Since then I have been hooked on fantasy football and I have not and will not ever draft a QB in the first round again.
