Weaknesses

NFL Player Comparision | Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs)

I honestly see a lot of Mahomes in Lock’s game, especially when looking back at the college version of Mahomes. Both extend plays with their legs and play with an overaggressive mindset (deep ball first). While it doesn’t look like Lock has quite the arm strength of Mahomes, it is likely one step below. Athleticism and ability to throw the ball from weird arm slots are very similar as well.

Bottom Line

Overall, I like Drew Lock as a prospect. He shows top-level arm talent and throws an elite deep ball. I also really like that he understands when it is appropriate to throw the ball away and feel this is an underrated aspect of a QBs game. The two most worrisome traits with Lock are that he fades away from passes frequently and that he throws behind receivers in the short to the mid-range passing attack. I am hoping most of the problem with accuracy is related to Mizzou’s deep pass first mentality making him late on the short passes. If he doesn’t learn to step in to pressure though, he will throw many more interceptions at the NFL level because arm strength alone will not beat defenses.
