After a wild opening weekend in College Football that included marquee matchups (Auburn vs. Washington/Michigan vs Notre Dame), near upsets (Penn State vs. Appalachian State) and playoff contenders taking care of business (Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama). We look to week two of College Football. Although week two is missing that marquee game you plan your weekend around. There are still a few games on the slate worth watching.
Best Game: Memphis at Navy.
Memphis opened their season with a drubbing of Mercer 66 to 14 cementing themselves as one of the best offenses in the country. Navy, on the other hand, had a tough matchup as they traveled across the United States and gave up 59 points to Hawaii. This week we should see a more focused Navy team as they have a huge conference matchup at home. This game will have a significant impact on who is going to represent the West Division in the American Athletic Conference
Underrated Game: Penn State at Pittsburg
Before Penn States scare against Appalachian State I would have said this game would end up being a blow out by the Nittany Lions, but now I suspect this game to be much closer. Playing a rival on the road this early in the season can define a season. Losing that rivalry game can start the media questioning the job security of that coach (See Michigan and Jim Harbaugh). James Franklin is in no danger of losing his job if Penn State (I don’t think) loses to Pittsburg but the rumors that he did not adequately replace offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead will be louder.
Overrated Game: Clemson at Texas A&M
A game that will be played on Prime Time ESPN is more deserving of a noon start time. Clemson is absolutely loaded on the defensive line and should be able to handle the A&M offensive line. The biggest question is what does Dabo Swinney do with Trevor Lawrence? In limited action, Lawrence was awfully good throwing for three touchdowns and 9.1 yards per pass. Urban Meyer stuck with a quarterback with limited arm talent in J.T. Barret and it likely cost him a shot at a National Championship; Nick Saban, on the other hand, went with a talented freshman Quarterback and won the National Title game. It is interesting how Dabo handles his quarterbacks throughout the game
A game with the biggest impact on playoff: USC at Stanford
Speaking of freshman quarterbacks JT Daniels of USC gets his first taste of conference play at the Farm on Saturday night. Stanford Stadium is one of the more underrated home-field advantages in college football and should be rocking on Saturday night. I know it is only week two but this game is huge in the Pac-12. Last season USC beat Stanford twice (once in the regular season and again in the Pac-12 Championship game) Bryce Love and the Stanford ground game have to be excited has USC gave up over 300 yards on the ground last week against UNLV.
