Cut’em or Keep’em Week 3 (2018 #Fantasy Football)

There are two things that seem to highlight what the beginning of the 2018 NFL season has been about: crazy storylines and explosive offenses. Ryan Fitzpatrick is doing his best Conor Mcgregor impersonation after a win against Philadelphia. Patrick Mahomes is doing his best impression of a human scoring machine, throwing 10 TDs in 2 games. The Steelers, one of the steadiest franchises in the NFL, suddenly look like they deserve their own reality show. TDs have gone way up, with QBs throwing at last 3 in abundance last week. In the midst of this madness, let’s take a look at who should stay and who you can eject from your fantasy roster heading into week 3.

Keep’em

Joe Flacco, (Ravens) 8% owned ESPN

Imagine my surprise when I saw that Flacco was owned in only 8% of leagues going into week 3. This is a guy that has been putting up borderline QB1 numbers over the past couple of weeks. Baltimore worked this offseason to bolster the weapons around Flacco and that is starting to pay dividends, as John Brown and Michael Crabtree form a solid receiving duo. Flacco would make a great backup QB for your squad, so keep him if you have him and pick him up if you don’t.

Blake Bortles, (Jaguars) 16% owned ESPN

Speaking of offensive explosions, we go to one Blake Bortles. Bortles shredded the Patriots defense to the tune of almost 400 yards passing and four scores. In addition, he also added some rushing yards as well, on his way to a 30+ point day. While we shouldn’t expect those numbers on a week to week basis, Bortles has provided a solid floor with upside. He would be a great keep if you have him as a backup to an underperforming starter (looking at you, Marcus Mariota), or a great add on the waiver wire.

Sony Michel, (Patriots) 65% owned ESPN

Sony made his NFL debut against arguably the toughest defense in the league. Even still, he led the Patriots in carries with 10 and added 2 catches to boot. he will have a much easier schedule moving forward and only James White to realistically fight for RB work. He should be the Patriots version of a lead back going forward and have good value as an RB3 with upside. Keep him if you have him, get him if you dont.

Cut’em

Derek Carr, (Raiders) 24% owned ESPN

David Carr just tossed his first TD of the season this past week. He also threw for 288 yards and didn’t throw any interceptions. In the current NFL where offensive fireworks are the norm, there is simply no reason to roster someone with so little upside. Jon Gruden seems to be a bit over his head as a coach, and it might take him a while to reacclimate himself to the current league. Look elsewhere for higher upside choices at QB, at least until Carr can prove he’s somewhat consistent.

Ronald Jones, (Buccaneers) 27% owned ESPN

Jones has been a bust so far in the NFL, not even being activated on gameday. A second round pick of the Bucs, there was hope that he could supplement Peyton Barber in the backfield, or at least get a share of the carries. His failures at pass protection and fumbling in the preseason have made it so he is nowhere near playing time. Use his roster spot on someone else and drop him immediately.

Phillip Dorsett, (Patriots) 24% owned ESPN

Dorsett has actually been a usable WR for the past couple weeks as injuries and releases and suspension have depleted the Patriots WR corps. he has posted decent numbers, coming up with 5 catches for 44 yards in the Patriots week 2 game against the Jags. The problem with Dorsett is he will soon find himself down the pecking order. The Patriots just traded for Josh Gordon, and Julian Edelman will soon be back from suspension. In addition, Sony Michel will soon be up to speed, and he will also take some targets away from Dorsett. If I’m a Dorsett owner, i try trading him while he still has some value, otherwise cut him for a WR in a better situation.
