Jake Arrieta

Arrieta will face the Marlins in Marlins Park. He gets a big park upgrade, and the Marlins are the second worst offense in the league according to wRC+. Arrieta has the lowest OTT on the slate, and the Marlins strike out at the eighth highest rate. They’ll likely have six or seven righties in the lineup, giving Arrieta the platoon advantage against most of the batters. Arrieta is priced up on Monday, which may keep his ownership down, but he’s pitched well recently and has a great matchup.

Jon Lester

Lester will see the Rockies in Wrigley Field. Any time I select a pitcher from Wrigley, it’s important to watch the wind. If the wind is blowing out, I will pass on Lester in cash games, but if the wind is blowing in, Lester becomes a much better play. The Rockies are currently last in wRC+ this season and get a park downgrade traveling to Wrigley Field. They also strike out 26.6% of the time against lefties, third highest in the league. For $8,000, Lester is a value if the wind cooperates.

Eduardo Rodriguez

Rodriguez will face the Royals in Fenway Park. He’s the biggest favorite on the slate, and has the second lowest OTT. The Royals aren’t the same offense they were a few years ago. I used to avoid pitching against the Royals because they didn’t strike out. This season, the Royals have the 9th highest strikeout rate against lefties, helping Rodriguez’s upside. At $7,600, he’s a great tournament play, and a fringe cash game play.

Hitters

Boston Bats

The Red Sox will face Jason Hammel in Fenway Park. They are my favorite stack for tournaments, and I’ll have at least three Red Sox in my cash games. Eduardo Nunez and J.D. Martinez are locks in cash at the moment, while Andrew Benintendi is a near lock. I’ve been playing around with builds to include Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez, but both of these players are slightly overpriced. The Red Sox are tied for the highest team run total, and Hammel has struggled to strike batters out this season. This fits nicely with a Red Sox team that likes to put the ball in play. Although Hammel has only given up .28 HR/9 so far this year, he projects to allow closer to 1.50 HR/9. I feel regression coming tonight and will try to force as many Red Sox bats into my lineups as I can.

Cubs Righties

The Cubs will face Kyle Freeland in Wrigley Field. It’s important to watch the wind speed and wind direction. If the wind is blowing out, I have even more interest in the Cubs. Freeland is a lefty, so players like Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Willson Contreras become cash game staples for me. The Cubs do not have a team run total yet, but I project them to match or exceed Boston’s team total depending on the wind. They also project for the most home runs on the slate, so the Cubs have tournament upside as well.

Ryan Braun

Braun will face Brandon Finnegan in Great American Ballpark. Braun will have the platoon advantage against Finnegan, and will hit in one of the best ballparks for power. The Brewers have a team run total of five, tied for the highest on the slate. At $4,500, Braun isn’t an obvious value, but he’s priced appropriately and has a lot of factors working for him.
