Max Scherzer

Scherzer will face the Diamondbacks in Chase Field. He’s tied for the lowest OTT and is a heavy favorite. Scherzer has a 40% strikeout rate this year, one of the highest in the entire league. It also helps that the Diamondbacks strike out at 25.2%, fourth highest rate in the league. He’s the top option on the slate, and will be locked into my cash game lineups.

Justin Verlander

Verlander is the next best option on the slate. He’ll face the Rangers who strike out 26.3% of the time, second highest in the league. He’s a heavier favorite than Scherzer, has the same low OTT, and has a high strikeout rate of 35%. I will take Scherzer over Verlander in cash games, but I like Verlander as a tournament option at lower ownership.

Luke Weaver

Weaver has really struggled lately, giving up 18 earned runs in his past four games. His price has stayed down because of it and comes in to Friday’s slate with a $7,900 price tag. Weaver will face the Padres in Petco Park. The Padres lead the league in strikeout rate at 27%, giving Weaver some upside. Vegas isn’t too worried about Weaver giving up runs as he has an OTT of 3.5. I’m betting on a Weaver bounce-back, and he’ll likely end up as my SP2 on Friday.

Hitters

Coors Bats

It’s another Coors slate, but one where you’ll likely want to pay up for pitching in cash games. Even paying for one of the aces will force you to punt a few positions. In my current build, I have mid-tier Coors bats like Trevor Story, Domingo Santana, and Chris Iannetta rather than the top bats like Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado. I’m prioritizing Scherzer over all hitters today. That being said, Blackmon, Arenado and Ryan Braun all project to be top five overall hitters today, so there is certainly a reason to play them if value opens up.

Top Punts

It’s a day where you may have to punt a few positions, so here are my top punts of the day (assuming they are in the lineup).

Matt Joyce (OAK) $3,000 – If Joyce is leading off, he provides salary relief against Sonny Gray. With the platoon advantage, a park upgrade, and a good spot in the order, Joyce becomes a solid punt.

Brad Miller (TBR) $3,100 – Assuming he’s hitting fourth, Miller provides a bit of power upside against Kevin Gausman. Gausman gives up his fair share of home runs (1.65 HR/9 this year), and Miller will have the platoon advantage in a good park for lefty power.

Jason Kipnis (CLE) $3,600 – Kipnis isn’t a full punt, but he’s in a great spot. He’ll have the platoon advantage against Jason Hammel and should bat second. Cleveland is also projected for the highest team run total on the slate outside of the Coors game.
