Justin Verlander
Verlander will face the Rangers in Minute Maid Park. He’s priced at $13,400 on DraftKings, but he’s the clear top option. He has an OTT (see pitcher chart), of 2.5 and is an absolutely massive favorite. The Rangers have the fourth highest strikeout rate in the league at 24.8%, and Verlander owns the highest strikeout rate of all the pitchers on the slate. Verlander is a lock as my SP1 in cash games.
Patrick Corbin
Corbin will face the Padres in Petco Park. He’s a moderate favorite with an OTT of 3.5, one of the lower numbers of the day. The Padres have the second highest strikeout rate in the league and rank last in wRC+. I won’t have Corbin in cash games, but he’s a cheaper tournament pivot away from Verlander.
Tyson Ross
In the same game, I’m considering Ross as my SP2 in both cash games and tournaments. While he’s an underdog and has an OTT of four, I’m having a hard time finding an SP2 I truly like. Ross is fairly safe due to his long leash, and the Diamondback strike out 23.9% of the time, sixth highest rate in the league. My only concern is the Diamondbacks also have a high walk rate, and Ross struggles with walks. For this reason, my desire to use Ross in cash games depends on opposing lineups and the umpire behind the plate. At a minimum, I like him as a tournament SP2.
