Four Down Territory: NFL Week 3

First Down

On Sunday afternoon America turned their televisions to Fox in hopes that “America’s Game of the Week” would be worth their time. Unfortunately, the fans had to watch the Cowboys stink up the joint while the Seahawks beat them 24-13. Seattle’s offense finally got the spark they’ve been looking for while Dak and company can’t seem to generate anything threatening outside of handing off to Zeke.

Earl Thomas had two interceptions and reminded the Cowboys why they should have pulled the trigger this offseason to get him. Dallas can still go out and snag the All-Pro safety but the price is probably more than the Cowboys want to pay or can even afford. If Dallas was smart, which they’ve proven that they aren’t, it’d be wise to not fall into the Earl Thomas trap and trade much needed draft capitol to obtain a safety that may or may not have three great years left.

They need to start looking long term.

According to Over the Cap, Dallas is scheduled to have $70 million in cap space this offseason. That’s a lot of money but in the very near future the Cowboys will have to pay Demarcus Lawrence, Dak, and Zeke. Lawrence is playing under the franchise tag currently and Dak will be a free agent in 2020. Dallas has a little more flexibility with Zeke because they can pick up his fifth year option, making him a free agent in 2021. Dallas is in desperate need of a true number one receiver and may have the chance to get Kelvin Benjamin or Golden Tate in free agency. So why throw picks and cash at Thomas when you can help your offense by signing some much needed receiver help then drafting one in the first round?

If Dallas wants to sacrifice long term success for Earl Thomas to only finish 8-8 well then that’s the most Dallas thing they can do.

Second Down

The beautiful thing about the NFL is that one week we can shout from the top of a mountain that something won’t happen only to look like fools seven days later.

Last week during 4DT I had a ball making fun of the Bills and how Vontae Davis decided to call it a career at halftime because he didn’t want to be a punching bag for the next three months. On Sunday those same Bills, minus Davis of course, traveled to Minnesota and MANHANDLED the Vikings 27-6. Josh Allen, another person I’ve criticized heavily, showed us some moves a man his size shouldn’t be able to pull off.

Talk your ish, Bills Mafia, you’ve earned it this week.

Third Down

Staying in the AFC East, the Patriots took a massive L on Sunday Night Football against the Lions. That’s right, the same Lions team that Sam Darnold ripped to shreds two weeks ago turned around and beat New England. Some will say that Lion’s head coach (and former Patriots defensive coordinator) Matt Patricia’s knowledge of the Patriots’ offense was critical and that point can be made. The fact still remains that New England’s defense is not good, at all. They are currently ranked 29th in total defense. There are only 32 teams in the NFL if you’re wondering.

Belichick earned his reputation for his defenses but as of late it seems like he might be losing his touch. I’m not counting the Patriots out because it’s premature and they’ve proven us wrong many many many many times but don’t be shocked if this trend continues.

Random, but this is hilarious, and I can’t stop watching it. Thanks, Bill.

Fourth Down

As quickly as the 49ers promising season started, it ended. Jimmy G tore his ACL Sunday against the Chiefs.

Jimmy’s season is obviously done but does that mean the 49ers have to give up too? The roster is good, not great, but they still have enough talent to compete for a wild card spot. Right now C.J. Beathard is set to take over the reigns but let’s be honest; no one could pick him out of a lineup even if he was wearing his jersey in said lineup. He’s not the answer this team needs right now….or ever.

Here’s a wild idea; why not reach into the past to fix the current QB problem?

That’s right, they should call Colin Kaepernick.

Before you start going on your rant about why he isn’t good enough can you honestly look in a mirror and say; “Yeah, I think Beathard is more skilled than the guy who led this team to the Super Bowl five years ago.”

If you can do that then I know what you’re REALLY trying to say.

Let’s be clear, I’m not saying that Kap can come into the fray and lead this team to a 12-4 season. I am saying that the 49ers have a better chance to win the Colin as the quarterback. Anyone saying anything different I’ll just assume you listen to Clay Travis and Jason Whitlock.

Extra Points

Adrian Peterson seriously might get 1,000 yards rushing this season and I’m not the least bit surprised.

Clay Matthews needs to fly to New York, walk in Roger Goodell’s office, and demand that he be shown how to properly tackle a quarterback. This is the third week in a row that Matthews has been called for roughing the passer because he had the audacity to tackle the quarterback.

Sam Bradford is going to collect $20 million and only had to play 2.5 games.

FINESSE KING!

Someone please get Jason Witten out of the Monday Night booth before he says something even more outlandish.
