Four Down Territory: NFL Week 5

A week of good football was ruined by the people in the highest office in the land.

Let’s start the drive.

1st Down: The fans in Indianapolis woke up Sunday with one thing on their mind; honoring The Sheriff. Earlier the Colts unveiled Peyton Manning‘s statue and was going to enter him into their ring of honor during halftime. What started out as an opportunity to relive the good times, seeing that they are now 2-3 and Andrew Luck still has a month before he hits the field, turned into a publicity stunt by the vice president.

Mike Pence went to the Colts game with the sole purpose of using the players as a way to push a narrative that doesn’t make sense if you’re paying attention. Four Down Territory has went in depth to what the original meaning of the kneel was so I’ll spare the details this time. Just know that the Vice President spent $250,000 of taxpayers money to fly from Vegas to Indy, sit through the anthem, be “outraged”, then fly to LA as previously scheduled. To make this stunt even more idiotic the VP tweeted a photo of him and his wife at the game. The kicker? That photo is three years old.

We are truly in the upside down.

To make the situation even worse Jerry Jones made the bold statement that if any of his players kneel during the anthem then they won’t play. That’s right, Jerry will sign woman beaters, drug abusers, and will even let murderers plays a week after trial but he draws the line at players peacefully protesting. Jerry’s words puts his players, specifically the black ones, in one hell of a bind. Stand and you’re labeled a sellout. Kneel and fear losing your job. Definitely not the best working conditions.

Let’s play a game, okay?

Google the comments that Pence and Jones made this weekend about white supremacists showing back up in Charlottesville for another rally at the Robert E. Lee statue. You know…the same place Heather Heyer was murdered at by those same white supremacists back in August.

Find anything? Yeah, neither did I.

If the NFLPA is smart they’ll take Jerry and the other complying owners to the shed after muzzling players first amendment rights.

Side note: If a politician sticks their nose into sports can we tell them to stick to politics or is that line only reserved for athletes who you want to be robots? Asking for a friend.

2nd Down: Injuries are a part of football. Anyone who follows the game knows that any play can be someone’s last. Sunday ended up being days for two of the leagues top stars.

Both J.J. Watt and Odell Beckham Jr. had their seasons end on Sunday after breaking bones in their leg and ankle respectively. This is Beckham’s first major injury in the pros but this makes number two for Watt and his second consecutive year on IR. It’s not time to push the panic button in Houston but it is fair to ask if 99 is starting to decline. Coming into week five Watt didn’t register a sack.

Make no mistake, if Watt retired tomorrow he’d be a first ballot hall of famer. His dominance since 2012 is more than enough to get him into Canton.

As far as their teams? Watt is another name on a long list of injuries for the Texans defense and Beckham is the Giants offense. If the season didn’t already look bleak  for Big Blue than this might be the final nail in the coffin.

3rd Down: Nothing is more Miami than a video of the offensive line coach doing blow popping up online.

I take that back.

Nothing is more Miami than a stripper releasing a video of the offensive line coach doing blow in the name of racial justice. Even Laremy Tunsil has to be shacking his head after that surfaced.

Chris Foerster, the coach who was doing the booger sugar, resigned from the Dolphins but I wonder how many people he side-eyed on the way out because I know that he’s not the only man in that building snorting lines.

4th Down: I hope Antonio Brown is as petty as I think he is.  Last week Ben Roethlesberger called Brown’s sideline tantrum as a distraction and called himself a leader of the team. On Sunday Big Ben backed that up with five interceptions and him wondering if he still had what it takes. This is a perfect time for Brown to zing Ben for those distraction comments.

Extra Points: The Titans really thought Matt Cassel is a good back up. Leonard Fournette waiving for contact is everything I love about Leonard Fournette. Myles Garrett is a GROWN ASS MAN.
