Four Down Territory: NFL Week 7

1st Down: On April 20, 2016 the Browns traded the number two overall pick and a conditional fourth to the Eagles for the number eight overall pick, a third round pick, a fourth round pick, a 2017 first round pick, and a 2018 second round pick. The Eagles picked Carson Wentz and the Browns traded that pick to the Titans and ended up picking Corey Coleman number fifteen overall. In September 2016 Browns exec Paul DePodesta said that he believed Wentz wouldn’t be a top 20 quarterback in the NFL and that’s why they traded the number two pick.

Fast forward to 2017.

Dabo Swinney said that passing on Deshaun Watson would be passing on Micheal Jordan. I mean, he did just slay the dragon known as Alabama during the national championship game in thrilling fashion. Sure, Watson may have missteped by not participating in the senior bowl but there was plenty of tape showing that he had what it took to be successful.

So what does Cleveland do?

THEY TRADED THE NUMBER TWELVE OVERALL PICK TO THE TEXANS!!!!

Now Cleveland has to sit back and watch as both Wentz and Watson play at elite levels while the play musical chairs with DeShone Kizer and Cody Kessler.
By the way, Hue Jackson really needs to make up his mind and pick either Kizer or Kessler. It’s hard for a young quarterback to learn the game if he fears for his job everytime he makes a mistake. But hey, Cleveland gonna Cleveland amiright?

The Browns are 0-7 and are in prime position to once again draft a quarterback high in 2018. Personally, I think the quarterbacks in this draft are mediocre at best which means Cleveland will take one too high and be in quarterback purgatory for another five years. To make matters worse Joe Thomas tore his tricep and will miss the rest of the year.

At least basketball is back and they can watch LeBron….for now.

2nd Down: Sunday the Colts got smoked by the Jaguars 27-0. Jacoby Brissett was sacked ten times and the offense looks like a rag tag group of friends playing in the wrong flag division.

Also, watching the Jags win in spite of Bortles is something to behold. Seriously.

After the game T.Y. Hilton was extremely forward in blaming the offensive line for the loss. He has a point but that might be something you save for Monday meetings. It’s clear that Pagano has lost this team and it’s a matter of when and not if he’s fired. I’m not Adam Schefter but I wouldn’t be shocked if he were let go before the end of the year. It’s the perfect way to distract Colts fans from the real story.

Andrew Luck‘s health.

Luck hasn’t played this season due to a bad shoulder and it’s pretty clear that he won’t play at all this year. The Colts are selling their fans a pipe dream by posting pics of Luck throwing in practice but as my mother used to tell me when I tried to outsmart her as a kid, “who you think you foolin?”

The Colts have dropped the ball on Luck by not giving him an offensive line and the more he stays there the more afraid I am for his career. Luck has generational talent but its seems like the Colts don’t know how to protect it.

3rd Down: I don’t know what got into athletes but Sunday played host to disrespectful celebrations and I loved every single one of them. The two that come to mind is the Lambeu leap by the Mark Ingram and Robby Anderson jumping into empty, premiere seats, against the Dolphins. Lastly, JuJu Smith-Schuster is the king of celebrations and he’s only a rookie. There’s genuine excitement when he scores. I’m glad the NFL has allowed celebrations again and I can only hope they get more disrespectful. I really can’t wait to see Lynch grab his groin in the endzone only for Talib to walk over and challenge him to a dual.

Now that I think about it, that’s the only thing I want to see this year.

4th Down: The Eagles are 6-1 and on top of the NFC. Carson Wentz is an MVP candidate. Their front four is the most ferocious in football. The front office has equipped Wentz with weapons. Doug Peaderson looks like Andy Reid Jr. This team believes it can win. The Eagles are flying high and look like real contenders.

As an Eagles fan, this concerns me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving every minute of this. Beating division opponents like JV teams really makes me smile.

I also know that Jason Peters and Jordan Hicks are out for the year. Which is exactly the kind of thing that only happens to the Eagles when they’re good. Will they be able to overcome it?

Only time will tell.

Extra Points: Raise your hand if you knew Kenny Britt was still in the league. A.J. Green has got to be tired of Andy finding ways to not get him the ball. On the CBS halftime show Nate Burleson said that he’s tired of seeing players being nice and swapping jerseys after games. He’s only been in broadcasting for two years and he’s already the most annoying person on TV. Jon Gruden tried his hardest to make “North Dakota strong” stick during Monday Night Football.
