Ja’Rico O’Quinn collects 6th win with RD1 KO

DETROIT, MI – Hard-hitting Detroit-based bantamweight Ja’Rico O’Quinn (6-0, 5 KOs) thrilled his hometown fans with his sizzling knockout of Szilveszter Kanalas in 1:23 of round one. O’Quinn’s fifth knockout served as the lead-in to the opener of SHOWTIME Boxing’s ShoBox: The New Generation’s “Detroit City Gold” card featuring two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields.

O’Quinn pressed Kanalas from the outset of the fight, bull-rushing Kanalas into the ropes early on to unload a heavy combination. Kanalas handled the flurry well. However, moments later O’Quinn quickly closed the distance again, forcing Kanalas into the ropes, but this time he connected flush with a smashing right hook to Kanalas’ head. Kanalas laid motionless along the ropes as the referee started his count, but then he quickly called the bout for fighter safety.

The devastating knockout immediately brought the packed crowd to its feet in the Event Center of the MGM Grand Detroit, as they saluted the Motor City’s next rising star – The Great Lakes King.
