MLB Gifts Fans With More Statistics

Statistics are very important in professional sports because they are useful in helping predict the outcome of games and which players will have big games. This information is especially helpful for those that enjoy betting online MLB sportsbook odds because baseball is the one sport where statistics have a major impact on.

Over the years, statistics have become more prevalent in professional sports, especially in baseball. Analytics and Moneyball have helped teams put together cost-efficient rosters that have been successful, saving owners in small markets a lot of money and allowing them to compete with teams with large payrolls.

This week, MLB and one of their tech partners New Relic are betting that baseball fans have a big appetite for statistics and they have decided to launch Digging into the Data, which is a new segment that will be on the MLB Network’s MLB Now show. Segments of the show can also be streamed on MLB.com.

Digging into the Data, which will premiere later this month, will do a deep analysis of player performance data and how baseball teams use the data.

In an interview with Fortune, Robson Grieve, the chief marketing officer of New Relic, said that the league’s use of data is very advanced.

Over the last year, baseball fans have been treated to a lot of new statistical information through MLB’s Advanced Media Statcast. The service provides statistics that run during baseball telecasts on TBS, FOX, and MLB network. The statistics provided go beyond the usual statistics they provide like the pitch speed and the distance of a home run.

Most of the new statistical information comes from the cameras and radar that are in ballparks, the information is then processed in the Amazon Web Services cloud.

According to Fortune, Sean Curtis, the MLBAMs senior vice president of engineering said that New Relic acts as an internal statcast for MLB’s technology systems.

Curtis said the New Relic is about getting performance data across all of MLB’s digital platforms. Curtis also added that all the technologies that are running under the covers and the MLB content that they send out to customers are all under New Relic’s supervision.

New Relic has a Software Analytics Cloud service that spots performance problems on MLB’s servers and on the Amazon We Services before they become apparent to the outside, meaning viewers watching games on their televisions, computers, tablets, or other mobile devices.

The New Relic product puts little pieces of software that acts as agents on their servers and report their status back to the customer.

New Relic is considered a pioneer in the analytics world because the company has made a name for itself in the past decade with its application performance monitoring. Developers love the software’s ability to pinpoint problems before they become a big issue. New Relic also has other tools that monitor the performance of apps on a user’s smartphone and other devices. The company competes with other companies like Datadog and AppDynamics in this field.

MLB also uses New Relic software to monitor how fast a user’s web page loads, and to find out if there are any problems on the receiving end of their content.
