Local professional boxing in Cincinnati went on hiatus after late-January, but two promoters are getting Cincinnati (and Midwest-based) boxers back to work in the coming weeks. Brian Hughes, head of Hughes Promotions, launches a new potential series of events at one of the local boxing scene’s familiar venues in just over a month – with possibly a dozen fights scheduled.
CINCINNATI – A couple of recent announcements catapulted Ohio professional boxing to the forefront of the sport’s world stage. Undefeated IBF world lightweight champion Robert Easter Jr. hosts mandatory challenger Denis Shafikov for a June 30th bout at Toledo, Ohio’s Huntington Center. The highly anticipated bout – Easter’s second consecutive title defense at the venue – is scheduled to air live on Bounce TV at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT, and Philadelphia’s Julian Williams, a top-ranked super welterweight contender, will make his return to the ring as the co-main event.
In addition to Easter Jr.’s card, SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® just announced its July 29th Premier Boxing Champions’ main event featuring former four-division world champion Adrien Broner versus undefeated three-division world champion Mikey Garcia. Ohio is unlikely to serve as the eventual host site for arguably the biggest match-up of Cincinnati native Broner’s career, but this kind of mega-fight further spurs the motivation and commitment for many of the Queen City’s promising prospects that frequently get to work with one of the sport’s youngest four-division world champions.
At this time, the event includes six preliminary bouts and six featured bouts on the main card that starts at 9:00 PM. Area fight fans will see familiar faces such as hard-hitting cruiserweight Santino “The Great Gambino” Turnbow, rangy welterweight Boubacar Sylla and his string of four consecutive wins by knockout, unbeaten heavyweight Shaun Seymore, cruiserweight Khetag Pliev a 2012 Canadian Olympian, steadily improving middleweight Kevin Roundtree, and Dayton, Ohio’s Jeff Camp a hungry southpaw welterweight looking to capitalize on his brutal second round knockout of veteran Agustin Cicero in August of 2016. Also, heavyweight Chaen Chess, a former Don King promoted fighter, will make his hometown debut.
Tickets are on sale now at Exclusive, Hard Knock, Black-Owned, and they will be also be available for purchase at the door. Ticket prices are $10 for kids, $30 for general admission, and $50 for ringside seats. Interested fight fans can also contact Brian Hughes of Team Hughes Promotions at (513) 441-7095 for tickets and information.
Come out and see some hard-hitting action live, and support all of these courageous warriors as they attempt to advance their careers in an extremely challenging sport.
