3 Reasons Trey Lance Will Breakout in 2022
Trey Lance Has The Goods
The 49ers traded their 2022 and 2023 first-round picks with a 2022 third-round pick to move up from No. 12 overall to the third pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The entire league had been put on notice. Finally, Kyle Shannahan has his first Konami Quarterback since Robert Griffin III to match his run-heavy history. Fantasy managers rejoiced as Trey Lance the mobile, strong-armed long shot from NDSU had secured the top three draft capital on a team built to win.
The rushing quarterback has been known to be an advantage in fantasy football, with limited quarterbacks like Tim Tebow and Taysom Hill posting QB1 numbers in the past. Lance rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns while throwing for 2,786 yards with 28 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in 2020. Fantasy truthers are currently salivating at the prospects of how Shannahan can deploy his new cheat code.
The Water Is Fine
People were worried about how his game would translate from FCS college football to the big stage with only one full season of college production. However, I urge you to please do yourself a favor, Don’t just dip your toes in the water; jump in headfirst.
In two of his three starts during his rookie campaign, Lance went for at least 20 points. First, against Seattle in Week 4 (20.4), he threw two touchdowns to zero interceptions while rushing for 41 yards. Then in Week 17, against Houston (20.1), Lance finished with two touchdowns and one interception. Two games is a small sample size, but he was the QB10 during championship week.
Trey Lance Key to The City Of Stars
With an entire offseason under his belt and the Shannahan system fully built around Lance. Surrounded by perineal TE1 George Kittle, 2021 breakout star Deebo Samuel, 2020 rookie standout Brandon Aiyuk and 2021 fantasy waiver wire darling Elijah Mitchell, the 49ers will have one of the fastest and most dynamic offenses in the entire league. Trey Lance has all the weapons needed to lock in as a breakout top 12 quarterback. His willingness to go deep and history as a runner gives him the goods to fit my not-so-sleeper pick to finish as the QB1 overall.
