Raiders’ New OC Luke Getsy Rolling Dice On Fantasy Dreams

One month after being fired from the Chicago Bears and after Kliff Kingsbury abruptly decided to go North with his expertise, the Chicago Bears hired Luke Getsy to be their offensive coordinator.

Getsy worked two years as the offensive coordinator for the Bears, before that he was with the Green Bay Packers for seven years. When in Green Bay he spent time as the offensive quality control coach, wide receivers coach,  quarterbacks coach, and passing game coordinator. His time in Green Bay coincides with Davante Adams’ time in Green Bay and his time in Chicago coincides with Justin Fields’ time in Chicago, it’s a mixed bag, okay.

Getsy’s Offensive Scheme

Head coach Antonio Pierce on Getsy, “Obviously, the running game shows up. I thought the passing game, as we move forward, is something we can improve on, Luke and the Raiders collectively.”

Two things can be equally true, Getsy could be in a prolific offense and could be the offensive coordinator in a bad offense. When Getsy was the wide receivers coach in 2016 in Green Bay it coincided with Adams in Green Bay. In that season with Aaron Rodgers under center and Adams WR1, Adams had 121 targets, 75 receptions, 997 yards, 1,471 yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns. He finished as WR12 in fantasy football averaging 13.3 yards per reception.

Last season as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, wide receiver D.J. Moore had career highs in receptions (96), receiving yards (1,364) and touchdowns (8). This occurred as the offense was 27th in passing yards (182.1) and 28th in passing attempts per game (30.2).

The Bears played with two quarterbacks, Fields played 13 games and finished with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while Tyson Bagent played five games and finished with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Both quarterbacks combined for 3,421 passing yards with a 201.2 average passing yards per game. In Getsy’s defense, the Bears offense has been historically bad for a good amount of time. But for 2022 and 2023 some of the blame for the Bears’ ineptness has to belong to Getsy.

“Both Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew struggled during OTAs. They split snaps with the first string evenly, but neither found much success during the practices that were open to reporters. Getsy’s scheme was often criticized in Chicago for several reasons—one major theme from players was that it could be complex.” reported Tasha Reed of The Athletic.

Getsy’s offense did have success running last season with the Bears ranking second in rushing attempts (534), rushing yards (2,399), and rushing yards per game (141.1). It helps when your quarterback has 124 rushing attempts and 654 rushing yards for the season, a luxury he will not have in Las Vegas.

Who Is Fantasy Relevant in Getsy’s Scheme?

Getsy has stated, “How you score in the NFL is target explosive passes and explosive runs, that’s what you need to do.”

Wide receiver Adams had 13 plays of 20+ yards last season and two plays of 40+ yards. While running back White in a limited capacity had two plays of 20-plus yards and one play of 40-plus yards.

Wide Receiver, Adams

The obvious choice is Adams and not only because of his familiarity with Getsy or that he managed to finish as WR11 in half-PPR fantasy leagues last season in an offense that averaged 19.5 points per game (23rd), 23rd in passing yards per game (198.8) and 22nd in passing attempts per game (32.8).

Adams is quarterback and offensive coordinator scheme-proof.

Running Back, Zamir White

The second obvious player is White, who shined in a limited capacity last season and has been given the reigns to this ground game.

Getsy’s run scheme is based on the outside zone where the Bears finished ninth in rushing success rate last season. The Bears ran zone 73% of their run plays which was the seventh-highest percentage in the league.

The Raiders finished 21st in offensive rushing success but when they were effective it was with outside zone runs which means White will not only be familiar with the scheme but was successful in it last season.

In the final four weeks of last season, when White was not in a running back by committee stranglehold, White had the third most rushing yards (397) and second most yards after contact (288) among all running backs, per Pro Football Focus. The sample size is small, but the ceiling is high.

Tight End, Brock Bowers

Bowers was the surprise selection of the Raiders as the 13th overall selection in the NFL 2024 Draft especially a year after the Raiders moved up in the second round to select tight end Michael Mayer.

Can Getsy be trusted to utilize the skill set of both tight ends?

Last season the Chicago Bears used 12 personnel the eighth most in the league running plays 23.2% of the time. The result was tight end Cole Kmet had career highs in receptions (73), and yards (719) while also having the second most receiving touchdowns (6) and targets (91).

Bowers’s collegiate career is a glimpse of how useful he can be for both the Raiders and fantasy football.

Stats from ESPN Stats and Info

In Mayer’s rookie season last year, he played in 14 games, where he had a 17.4 % slot rate (105 slot snaps) on 266 routes run. Mayer finished the season with 40 targets, 27 receptions, and 304 receiving yards, while his 11.3 yards per reception was ninth among tight ends.

With both tight ends on the field, it only opens up for White and Adams to also excel. The Raiders have on paper the potential for a dynamic offense, regardless of who starts as quarterback.

Getsy may have been their second choice and a gamble after his stint in Chicago. but this is Vegas baby and gambling is a way of life.
