College Football: Week 2 Winners and Losers (#CFB)
Week 2 provided a few surprises Cal over Washington, BYU over Tennessee (More on this game later), a few overtime games Michigan and Army (More on this game later), Nebraska and Colorado, BYU and Tennessee, ULM and Florida State (Does Florida State have a defense?) and great game on Saturday night with LSU defeating Texas. Speaking of LSU let’s get into the winners and loser portion.
Winners:
LSU offense:
Joe Burrow was outstanding Saturday night throwing for 471 yards and four touchdowns in a road victory against the Texas Longhorns in Prime Time. The last time an LSU quarterback threw for over 400 yards was Rohan Davey in 2002. Burrow’s performance last night now ranks second in LSU history for single-game passing yardage. Even more impressive is that it marks the first time in LSU history that three receivers went over 100 yards. Kudos to offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger for transforming the offense out of the stone age and into an offense that has the potential to be the best in school history.
Maryland offense: Keeping with the offensive side of the ball the Maryland Terrapins have now scored 142 points in two games……142! Those are PlayStation numbers when the difficulty is set on easy and you take the best team in the country and match it up against the worst team in the country. The Terrapins are now averaging an absurd 70 points per game; what is mind-boggling is that Maryland could drop 50 points on Temple next week and it will lower their scoring average by 7 points.
Losers:
Tennessee:
Tennessee once again lands on the losers list for another shocking loss. Leading by three with six seconds remaining in the football game. BYU quarterback Zach Wilson connects for a 64-yard pass to put the Cougars in a position to tie the game at the end of regulation. BYU went on to win in double overtime capping a second straight loss for the Volunteers who now fall to 0-2 for the first time since 1988. The schedule does no favors for Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt and the Volunteers. Home against Chattanooga which looked like an easy victory coming into the season is up in the air now, home against Georgia and Mississippi State than on the road against Alabama. barring an upset Tennessee will be 1-6 entering into late October with Pruitt’s job on the line.
Charlie Strong Head Coach South Florida
Strong inherited a strong South Florida program that improved their win totals every year under then head coach Willie Taggart from 2, 4, 8, 11 and a final ranking of #19 in the country. In Strong’s first year he won 10 games than 7 and now starts 0-2. Losing to Wisconsin to open the season is understandable, but to get shut out at home is something else. Losing to a complete rebuilding Georgia Tech program only adds to the fire of being on the hot seat.
MVP: Jeff Monken Head Coach Army
For the second year in a row Army took a College Football Playoff contender to the brink and nearly beat them on the road. Jeff Monken prepares his team to play big-time opponents like none other and should have beat a top ten team on the road. Army-led Michigan at halftime and looked to take control of the football game by driving deep into Michigan territory late in the third quarter; a touchdown would put the Black Knights up two touchdowns with roughly twenty min of game time left. Considering Army’s ball control Triple Option offense the Wolverines would have only had maybe two or three drives left in the game. History changed however when quarterback Kelvin Hopkins threw an interception to give Michigan some momentum. Even with the interception, Army had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a missed field led to overtime. Even though Army lost the game Monken had his team prepared to upset Michigan in the Big House.
