Cut’em or Keep’em Week 2 (#FantasyFootball)

Welcome to another year of fantasy football. I debuted last year with my Cut’em or Keep’em column, and I’m happy to say that we are back for year two and can’t wait to get started. So without further ado, let’s dive right into this week’s players you should keep around, or toss overboard.

Cut’em or Keep’em Week 2

Cut’em

Donte Moncrief, (Steelers) 59% owned

Donte Moncrief caught three passes for seven yards in Pittsburgh’s 33-3 loss to New England on Sunday. Moncrief looked terrible in his first game as a Steeler. He had a case of the dropsies, as he let multiple passes slip through his fingers,  including a touchdown that would have brought the Steelers to within 10 points in the 3rd quarter.

While the volume was good with 10 targets, his efficiency was downright brutal. James Washington and Diontae Johnson are waiting in the wings, and there is no reason why they cannot overtake Moncrief going forward. There will be better options on the waiver wire, and I suggest scooping up an Amendola or Hollywood brown over Moncrief.

Geronimo Allison, (Packers) 45% owned

Geronimo Allison may as well have not existed in week 1. He didn’t see a single target in the opener. He’s clearly the third WR in Green Bay, playing only 32 snaps compared to 42 for Marquez Valdes-Scantling and 62 for Davante Adams. Without MVS’ injury, Allison’s snaps may have fallen even closer to Trevor Davis‘ 19. Trevor Davis!!!

Davis looked like the better WR in the game on fewer snaps, which does not bode well for Allison. Green Bay’s offense does not seem like it is going to support three WR as in years past, and trusting Allison will be too hit or miss most weeks. Drop him for a more consistent option.

Tony Pollard, (Cowboys) 33% owned

Ah Tony, what could have been. Pollard was the hottest waiver wire pickup heading into the season due to the holdout of Zeke Elliott. After Zeke signed, his value plummeted, but Tony was still expected to have a decent timeshare for a couple of weeks while Zeke ran up to speed. In week 1, Pollard rushed 13 times for 24 yards for a measly 1.8 yards a carry. Zeke had a much greater workload than what was originally thought, and his carries are only going to go up. Shrinking opportunity and meager production equal finding some fantasy RB value elsewhere.

David Montgomery, (Bears) 94% owned

Montgomery was a hot ticket in redraft and dynasty leagues, as he was projected to slot in and take over Jordan Howard’s vacated carries from the get-go. Needless to say, it didn’t work out that way. David Montgomery had a rather underwhelming debut Thursday night when he rushed six times for just 18 yards. His 27-yard reception was his lone splash play of the game.

Reports out of Chicago are positive, as the Bears are still high on him. Montgomery has the ability to be a true three-down player, and he should see more action as the season progresses. As the season goes on, Montgomery will surely but slowly eat into Mike Davis’ workload, as he is clearly the more talented runner and receiver. I expect him to position himself for lead back duties sooner rather than later.

Davante Adams, (Packers) 99% owned

Adams disappointed Thursday against a solid defense in Chicago. He only had 4 receptions for 36 yards, which was abysmal. Adams generated a mediocre 50.0 percent catch rate while notching a game-long reception of just 11 yards. Adams’ yardage total was his lowest since Week 7 of the 2017 season, and one that has fantasy owners everywhere raising eyebrows.  In his defense, the Bears have an elite defense, and the coverage Adams faced does have to be taken into account. Adams makes a very good trade target, as his owners may be panicking. Keep him if you got him.

OJ Howard, (Buccaneers) 95% owned

Howard brought in four of five targets for 32 yards in the Buccaneers‘ 31-17 loss to the 49ers on Sunday while also losing a fumble. The Bucs seemed to think it was still preseason, as they had a rather lifeless performance in week 1. Howard added to the sleepwalking, having committed a turnover as well. The positives are that Howard did lead the team in receptions, and figures to be a prime bounce-back candidate next week. He will have a tough game ahead against the Panthers, but Tampa is too talented of an offense to be held down for long.
