Pitchers

Robbie Ray

Ray will face the Rockies in pitcher friendly (we think) Chase Field. While Chase Field has most recently been a hitters park, the addition of a humidor will cause the park to play more pitcher friendly. While Ray struggled a bit with the home run ball last season, his strikeout rate was elite. The humidor should keep a few more fly balls in the park, giving Ray a solid boost. Even at the sixth highest price on DraftKings, Ray is the best value pitcher on the entire slate and will be locked into my cash game lineups.

Dallas Keuchel

I probably won’t pay for him in cash games, but in a tournament, I’ll pay up for Keuchel. With many perceived quality pitchers in the $9-10K range, I’d be surprised if his ownership was high. The Astros are the second largest favorite on the slate, so Keuchel should be set up for the win. Keuchel can go deep into games, and is actually one of the best bets for strikeouts on the slate. I’ll see if I can find some value bets and roll with the Astros ace in tournaments.

Hitters

Mike Trout

Trout disappointed on Opening day, but I have no problem going back to Trout today. He’s the best hitter in baseball and will face a pitcher who’s wOBA was 0.85 higher against  righties compared to lefties last season. If you pair Robbie Ray with a cheap pitcher, you can fit all of the bats, but even if you select another ace, you should still make room for Trout.

Freddie Freeman

Freeman is underpriced at $4,500 on DraftKings. He’ll face Nick Pivetta who gave up a 1.69 HR/9 last season. These HR/9 numbers are often inflated by a high HR/FB rate, but they still demonstrate some potential upside. Freeman is one of the most underrated players in baseball, leading to cheap prices like today. I’m starting my lineups with Freeman, Trout, and Ray and filling in the rest as the day goes along.

Punts

If you choose to go with two high priced pitchers, you will need to find some punts today. Here are my favorites.

Wilson Ramos (TBR) – $2,700 – Ramos will face David Price, but will likely hit near the top of the order against the lefty. Whenever I see a catcher with power at the top of the order for a cheap price, it’s almost an auto play even against a quality pitcher.

Curtis Granderson (TOR) – $3,200 – If Granderson hits in the top five, he’s one of the best values on the board.

Justin Smoak (TOR) – $3,700 – The same applies to Smoak. If he’s hitting in the top five, he becomes a great value with power in a good ballpark.

Odubel Herrera (PHI) – $3,600 – I was ready to play Herrera yesterday until he was left out of the lineup. As long as he’s in the lineup, he’ll be solid outfield value.
