Pitchers

Jose Berrios

Berrios will face the White Sox in Target Field. He’s the biggest favorite on Thursday and has the second lowest OTT (see pitcher chart). He’s a strikeout pitcher and the White Sox strike out at the 4th highest strikeout rate this year. I expect him to be very popular on a short slate, but he’s worth paying up for in both cash games and tournaments.

Gio Gonzalez

Gonzalez will face the Rockies in Nationals Park. He’s also a heavy favorite and has a low OTT. The Rockies take a huge park hit, and project a bit worse against lefties. There’s also a chance some Rockies players, namely Nolan Arenado, serve a suspension in this game which would give Gonzalez another boost. He’s a great tournament play, and may be a good cash game option depending on the Rockies lineup.

Hitters

Mike Trout

Trout will face Ian Kennedy in Kaufman Stadium. Once again, Trout is the clear top option and actually projects higher than 50% of the pitchers on the slate. Even if I’m paying up for both high-priced pitchers, I’m going to pay for Trout as well and punt where I have to. I’m hoping Trout’s price tag as well as the price tag of the best pitching options will keep his ownership low.

Twins Bats

To make the expensive pitching work, we need to find ways to save salary, and the Twins entire batting order is too cheap. They’ll face Lucas Giolito in Target Field. Giolito hasn’t quite figured it out at the major league level, and the Twins have a team run total of 4.5, tied for highest on the slate. There are other good teams to stack in tournament if you want to find a cheap pitcher you like, but the Twins are the best affordable stack, and one I’ll use in my cash games.

If you’re paying down at pitcher

Trea Turner is the bat I’m most interested in if I pay down at pitcher in tournaments. He’ll face Chad Bettis and is the top projected shortstop by almost two points. Justin Upton is also one of my favorite plays if I can afford him. I have a hard time clicking the submit button based on my pitching when I pay up for Turner and Upton, but it is viable in tournaments.
