DFS NBA DraftKings Showdown Advice 4/25/19
What’s up GoingFor2…nation? World? Peeps? I need to work on that. Anyways, it has been a while since I’ve put up any advice columns. In fact, I haven’t played DFS in a meaningful way since the NBA All-Star break. My day job moved me to another location farther from home and it has taken a while to figure out how to make this work. Enough about me, I’m back and that’s all the matters.
With the NBA playoffs in full force, I’ve been playing Showdown on DraftKings over the last few days and I think I’m ready to break down some strategy. Thursday there is only one game going on, and it’ll be competing with the NFL Draft, Game 5 between the Nuggets and Spurs.
Lineup Construction
First off, let me explain my strategy in showdown slates. I start with finding the cheapest “value” player I can that will allow me to fit in as many studs as possible. Usually, I can find a guy cheap enough in the regular spots to use that will allow me to pay up elsewhere, but occasionally my “value” guy ends up being my “captain”. Let me explain…
A few nights ago in one of my winning lineups in the Det/Mil series, my captain was Luke Kennard at $7,500. But, because he was such a cheap captain, it allowed me to pay up to get the Greek Freak (didn’t feel like looking up the spelling), Andre Drummond and Khris Middleton. Kennard got me 46.5, the Freak got me 50.5, Drummond 45.5 and Middleton 44.25. Unfortunately, I went with Sterling Brown (14.75 DK points) over Pat Connaughton (42.75) or the lineup would have made me a lot more money — but the strategy was sound.
So with that in mind, let’s look at a few guys I might use as my value…
Value Plays
Torrey Craig $3,800
I look for a few things in my cheap values in showdown;
- Averages more than 20 minutes consistently
- Has the potential for a big game
- Prefer a player playing at home
Craig checks two of those three boxes;
- After getting a total of 21 minutes over the first two games, he has now logged 37 and 28 minutes in the last two.
- Put up 36.5 DK points in Game 4
- He is playing on the road, but his two best games in this series have both come on the road, so maybe he likes the road more?
Malik Beasley $4,200
Beasley also checks two of the three boxes averaging over 25 minutes a game in this series and putting up 36.3 DK points in Game 3. He too is on the road, but his best game in this series was also in San Antonio.
Jamal Murray $13,500 (Captain)

Murray is the cheapest of the stud players in this game. The trio of Nikola Jokis, LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan are all more expensive, making Murray, who has 50-point upside, the best option for a value at the captain spot.
Studs
Nikola Jokic $11,600
As much as I would like to put him in the captain spot, 13k-plus is just too steep for me, but at 11.6k he is much more attractive. His worst outing in this series was 43 DK points in Game 3. In a potential closeout game for the Nuggets, look for the Joker to make his presence felt
DeMar DeRozan $10,600
The Spurs are playing for their playoff lives and DeDe knows all too well about being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. He will do everything in his power to prevent a Game 6 loss, including dropping 50-plus DK points on them.
