Fantasy Baseball: News and Notes Week 7
The biggest news of the week was by far the significant injury of Freddie Freeman. As someone who had many shares of Freeman, this one hurts. When an injury to a star player happens, all the owners panic and immediately see if they can trade for another elite player at the same position. This is not what you want to do. Chances are, there are players on your team that are underperforming and if you can get them to step up with the combination of buying low on certain guys, you will be fine.
Jose Peraza was a popular preseason breakout candidate. If you have him, hold and continue to start him on a weekly basis. Peraza has a long track record of producing a great batting average whether it’s in the minor leagues or the majors. As of right now, he has a .252 batting average and only 8 steals. Better days are ahead.
Two of my favorite buy-low candidates are Christian Yelich and Todd Frazier. People don’t realize how Frazier is walking more, striking out less, but his slow start is a combination of an early April sickness and a low babip. Yelich is another great buy low as he has basically done what has been expected from him except for the batting average. Expect this to correct itself as he has a career .356 babip and is only at .286.
Dallas Keuchel got placed on the 10 day DL with a pinched nerve in his neck. It doesn’t sound too serious and he will probably be back very soon. Keuchel has been an ace this year and has had a stellar bounce-back season after his terrible 2016.
Alex Wood has been terrific this season with a 1.88 era and 18.1 consecutive shutout innings. He may not retain his 1.88 era but his batted balls data and peripherals look legit. The regression may come in the HR/9 which is .21 when his career average is .75. He is also limiting the hard contact which is 9% down from last year. He may be the rare case of a buy high.
Michael Fulmer was a player in the preseason that people were overlooking. Everybody seemingly forgot how he was the rookie of the year and was dominant in the middle of the season last year. He’s got a 2.72 era going into Monday.
If Devon Travis is on your waiver wire, go get him now.
Another quick note, buy low on Rizzo. His babip is way too low from his usual standards.
