Fantasy Football: Keep ‘Em or Cut ‘Em – Week Five

We are officially 25% of the way through the NFL season! How are your teams making it? I am in 7 leagues this year and would you believe that I do not have a winning record in any of those leagues? So whichever players I tell you to cut this week, you should probably keep them instead, because they will then have breakout games in week five. (i.e. Joe Mixon in last week’s article!) Let’s dive in and take a look…

Marvin Jones Jr – Detroit Lions WR (1 reception for 9 yards)

Since Kenny Golladay returned two weeks ago, Jones has only seen five targets, while Golladay has seen 15 targets over that same span. Marvin Jones is already 30 years old and has yet to top 55 yards this season through four games. Jones had the Lions receiving corps to himself for the first two weeks of the season and couldn’t get much done. I don’t expect any changes here now with Golladay taking over the spotlight. Verdict: Cut ‘Em

Kenyan Drake – Arizona Cardinals RB (13 carries for 35 yards)

For those of you that used a late first-round or early second-round pick on Kenyan Drake, how is your team doing right now? Drake has certainly struggled to start the season. We saw Drake end last season with 58 carries for 363 yards and 6 TDs in three games. In the four games so far this season, Drake has 67 carries for 254 yards and 1 TD. Don’t give up just yet, the volume is still there for Drake. There is concern that he isn’t being targeted much in the passing game either, but I would hold for another week or two and see if a breakout game is coming his way before I try to make any deals and let him loose. Verdict: Keep ‘Em

Deebo Samuel – San Francisco 49ers WR (3 receptions for 35 yards; 1 carry for 10 yards)

Deebo missed the first three games of the NFL season while recovering from foot surgery. His debut against Philadelphia was a quiet one, but give it time! George Kittle returned from injury as well and was an absolute target hog, catching all 15 of his targets. When Jimmy Garoppolo returns, I expect Deebo to find chemistry with Jimmy G rather quickly. While Kittle is seeing double teams, it will open the field for Deebo. Take the wait and see approach here. When this offense gets 100% healthy again, it will be a hot commodity! Verdict: Keep ‘Em

Mike Williams – Los Angeles Chargers WR (Did Not Play)

I had high hopes for Williams this year. After seeing 89 targets last year, culminating with 49 receptions, 1001 yards, and 2 TDs in 2019, I had high hopes! But what a waste of a roster spot so far. After 4 weeks, Mike Williams has seven receptions for 100 yards. He was ruled out of the game this past week with a hamstring injury. That’s bad news bears. I would rather dig through the waiver wire for a gem than to waste my time with this guy. Verdict: Cut ‘Em

T.Y. Hilton – Indianapolis Colts WR (3 receptions for 29 yards)

Fun fact: In 2018, Andrew Luck‘s final season, T.Y. Hilton averaged over 90 yards per game. Since then, Hilton has had zero games with 90 or more yards. WOOF. Hilton is on pace to finish the season with 52 receptions for 648 yards. That’s it. No TDs. What a disappointing start. I was so excited for a bounce-back season with Phillip Rivers under center and a shiny new rookie at RB. But it hasn’t been all butterflies and rainbows for Hilton this season. For me, I am ready to jump ship. I think Hilton is finally showing his age (31 in November). Verdict: Cut ‘Em

Justin Jackson – Los Angeles Chargers RB (6 carries for 9 yards; 2 receptions for 12 yards)

Justin Jackson left week one with an injury and as a result, lost his job to rookie Joshua Kelley. However, now that Austin Ekeler will miss four-to-six weeks with injury, hold onto Jackson and grab him on your waivers if you haven’t already. Head coach Anthony Lynn has made it very clear that he prefers the RBBC approach to his offense and as long as rookie QB Justin Herbert is under center, there will be plenty of touches and targets to go around for Justin Jackson. Jackson will fade back into the shadows when Ekeler comes back from injury, but maybe he can be a crucial piece to your team capitalizing on a few wins! Verdict: Keep ‘Em
