Four Down Territory: Double Thrust Alert

First Down

The NFL treade deadline is November 3rd and teams will either go all in for this year or prepare for the future.

But what should teams do?

Don’t sweat it, potential general managers that happen to be reading this article. The answer is below.

Buyers

Tennessee Titans: The Titans are 5-0 but their defense is giving up 25 points per game. Their saving grace is that they’re tied with Kansas City and Seattle with a +6 turnover differntial.

What should they buy?

Pass rushers. As many as possible. The Titans only have seven sacks this year. Signing Jadeveon Clowney and Vic Beasley this offseason hasn’t produced as the Titans had hoped but they don’t have time to wait for them to heat up.

If the Titans want to repeat the success of last year’s team and go further then at some point they’ll need to rush the passer (i.e. Patrick Mahomes).

Buffalo Bills

Another AFC hopeful that won’t make it unless they make some MAJOR moves. The Bills are in the bottom part of the league in rushing.

A look at their depth chart

RB1: Devin Singletary

RB2: Zack Moss

RB3: TJ Yeldon

That’s not going to cut it come playoff time. Josh Allen has been playing great this year but if your plan is to leave it on his shoulders then you’re asking for trouble. Allen and the Bills have attempted 79 play-action passes this year, second in the league. How much better would they be if they had an actual run game?

Seattle Seahawks

Russell Wilson is currently in the MVP race but Seattle’s dirty little secret is that their QB is getting pressured on 27.6% of his dropbacks. Granted, some of this could be equated to Russell’s scrambling ability but this is still a little too close for comfort if you’re Seattle.

They need some help on the offensive line.

Football Outsiders has them ranked in the top ten but the Seahawks would be foolish to not look for more depth.

Seattle’s biggest problem will be assets that teams will find worthy enough to trade for. They don’t have a first round pick until 2023 and only have five picks in the 2021 draft.

Sellers

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are projected to be $69 million over the cap next season. At 1-4-1 and riddled with injuries it’s time for the Eagles host a yard sale and the following players are an open box sale.

Three years ago everyone on that list except the Jackson boys played a crucial part in the Eagles’ championship run. The thing is….that was three years ago. Philadelphia needs to plan for the future and that starts by shedding salary ASAP.

Atlanta Falcons

Another team that’s strapped for cap space and going nowhere are the Falcons. After firing Dan Quinn (which was waayyy too late) it’s time for the Falcons to turn the page; especially if they get a top five pick.

This is going to be painful Atlanta but it’s time to trade Matt Ryan. He’ll be 36 at the start of next season and you’d rather get rid of him one year too early than one too late. If they’re within striking distance of Trevor Lawrence then a rebuild might be faster than they realize.

That also mean potentially getting rid of Julio Jones, too.

And that’s okay.

Houston Texans

If you’re name isn’t Deshaun Watson or Laremy Tunsil then you’ve been put on notice. The Texans have been giving away talent for nothing the last two years and now it’s time to change that.

That starts with trading J.J. Watt.

They’re fighting with Jacksonville for last place in the AFC West so it’s time to commit to the future. Houston wasting Watson’s prime because they can’t decide if they’re rebuilding or going all in for is a crime and someone should call the authorities.
