Four Down Territory: NFL Week 10
Jerry Jones potentially taking a flamethrower against the league is too deep for an intro so let’s just start the drive.
1st Down: Our old friend Jerruh is back at it again. He’s upped the ante since last week and started a full on mutiny against Roger Goodell. It’s been all but confirmed that the Cowboys owner empowered Papa John to speak out against NFL leadership and he’s made it clear that he’s not happy with Zeke‘s suspension. Jones even went on the radio and said that Roger is still trying to fix his mistake after the Ray Rice debacle and that the commissioner was originally soft on domestic violence cases. It’s also been reported that it was Jones who leaked out Roger’s compensation demands and perks for his new contract, if it ever comes.
In other words, Jerry ouchea wildin against the shield.
Jones has gotten so outta pocket that the other owners have discussed enforcing a bylaw that would essentially make Jones sell the Cowboys.
Pro Football Talk breaks it down:
A league source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that multiple owners already have been discussing the possibility, which flows from Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution & Bylaws. Specifically, Section 8.13 authorizes the Commissioner to determine that an owner “has been or is guilty of conduct detrimental to the welfare of the League or professional football.” If the Commissioner believes the available sanction (a $500,000 fine) is “not adequate or sufficient,” the Commissioner may refer the issue to the NFL’s Executive Committee, which has the power to compel “[c]ancellation or forfeiture of the franchise in the League of any member club involved or implicated,” with a directive to sell the team.
Let’s make one thing clear; if you want Jerry to sell the star then you’re going to have to kill him and take it. Men like Jerry don’t roll over easily and would rather die than give into some bylaw; even if he agreed to said legislation.
The owners probably want to send a message to Jerry that what happens between the owners stays between the owners. You don’t bring dirty laundry to the public; that’s bad for everyone’s pockets.
And no rich person wants some outside influence to mess up the money.
Goodell’s contract negotiations is the only part of this story that’s interesting. If Jerry can get enough owners on his side (he won’t) then he can hypothetically give Roger the boot. The only problem with that is the other owners would essentially be bowing to Jerry and the next commissioner would most likely be hand picked by Jones.

I expect Jerry to keep the charade up for a little while longer before falling back in line. Roger has made him too much money over his tenure and it’d be insane to get rid of him now. This is just Jones taking a play out of the angry rich man’s book. Complain publicly, leak something, complain through someone else, sue, throw the lawsuit out after you’ve calmed down, and make more money.
2nd Down: It’s no secret that the NFC is the supreme conference. Let’s be serious, outside of the Patriots, Kansas City, and Pittsburgh who really has a chance to win it all in the AFC? Meanwhile, in the NFC the Eagles, Rams, Viking, Saints, Seahawks, and even the Panthers/Falcons have a legit shot to play in the Super Bowl. If the playoffs started today The Falcons would be on the outside looking in with a 5-4 record followed by the Lions, Cowboys, and Packers with the same record. The first team out in the AFC, the Ravens, are 4-5 and don’t even resemble a playoff team. Whoever comes out of the NFC will definitely be battled tested but is that necessarily a good thing? Would you rather be a good team in a bad conference, play one tough game, and make it to the Super Bowl or a good team in a great conference, play two to three hard games, and make the Super Bowl dinged up?
3rd Down: Martellus Bennet has had an interesting week. Early last week the Packers cut him and said the reasoning is that he didn’t disclose a shoulder injury. Bennett went to Instagram to voice his frustrations and accuse the Green Bay doctors of encouraging him to play with that bad shoulder. After being cut Bill Belichick played the part of the troll and not only claimed Martellus but played him Sunday night against the Broncos.
I’ll admit, I’m not the biggest fan of Bennett claiming that he needed surgery on his shoulder only to suit up a few days later for the Patriots. I get his reasoning, though. Why play with Brett Hundley and lose when you can catch passes from Tom Brady and compete for a Super Bowl? I get it, you’re probably screaming about loyalty, keeping your word, playing through the life of a contract but as long as owners can cut players in the name of money and winning then a player should have the same right.
I know player rights sound inflammatory a few people. I mean, some of you cheerfully champion saving billionaires money. Which is stupid, by the way.
4th Down: Vontaze has a reputation as a dirty player. I’m not here to defend him because he is indeed, a dirty player. Sunday he got the short end of the stick, though. First he was called for unnecessary roughness on a play where he clearly let up before making contact. Shortly thereafter he was ejected for making contact with an official. I’ve watched a lot of football in my day and I’ve seen players hit refs harder than that with no repercussions. Burfict’s reputation is so muddled that the smallest thing got him tossed.
Let that be a lesson, kids. If you act like an ass then people will treat you….wait for it….like an ass.
Stuff like this doesn’t help.

Extra Points: Goodwin losing his baby then playing the same day is a strength I can’t even imagine. Seeing Teddy get emotional on the sideline was dope, a truly great moment. Put a microphone in front of Jalen Ramsey at all times. Yes, the Patriots beat the Broncos but so did the Chargers. Why are we making a big deal out Brady beating a 3-6 team? Chip Kelly in the SEC is exactly what we all need right now. PLEASE STOP PUTTING THE DOLPHINS ON NATIONAL TELEVISION!
The more they try to block you out the more you shine.
