Four Down Territory: NFL Week 15

Kickoff

I know, last week 4DT didn’t post and you were sad and down about it. Apologies, we had some bugs on our end but the good news is that it’s all fixed and business is back to normal.

Let’s start the drive.

1st Down

Jerry Richardson is selling the Panthers due to sexual harassment allegations and the use of a racial slur. SI also reported that at least four victims received substantial financial settlements.

Yes, the same Jerry Richardson that told Cam Newton that he couldn’t have tattoos or piercings. Shocking, I know.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if a tape popped up of him using a slur in referring to Newton a la Donald Sterling.

I’m sure you’re not shocked that a rich and powerful man would use his clout to intimidate force himself onto female employees.

The most interesting part of this story is the conversation of who the new owner will be. Bad Boy, Ciroc owner, and all around mogul P. Diddy went to Twitter to throw his name in the ring of people interested. Steph Curry also said he wouldn’t mind being a minority owner too. If that isn’t interesting enough then finding out the Kaepernick has also expressed interest in being a minority owner should grab your attention.

We were able to get a reaction from Jerry Jones after hearing that Diddy and Kap are interested.

It takes a lot to be an NFL owner. Outside of the money, which I think Diddy can find, there is no way the other owners will vote him in.

Entertain me as a paint a picture, pleae.

All of the owners are in a room talking about the pros and cons about Diddy being an owner. Robert Kraft walks in wearing his Air Force Ones and actually makes the case for Diddy. Paul Allen starts buying it and thinks that adding him would be a step in the right direction. I mean, how can the NFL pass on having a black owner? That’d be GREAT for business and perception. Hell, the NBA can’t even top that. Arthur Blank starts feeling it and one by one each owner actually considers it.

Daniel Snyder then walks in and reminds everyone that Diddy made six people walk across Brooklyn to get him a piece of cheesecake.

But hey, any man that can make this outfit work can do anything.

#TakeThat #TakeThat

2nd Down

Conspiracy twitter got a lot more fuel Sunday. After Big Ben lead the Steelers to, what seemed to be, a game winning touchdown to Jesse James. The officials decided to overthink what a catch is and took away the score.

I get it. The letter of the law says that it wasn’t a catch but at some point common sense has to kick in for officials.

One would think that the NFL would have fixed this problem after the Calvin Johnson catch/non-catch against the Bears. Or, maybe, one would think they would fix the rule after Dez caught that pass against the Packers.

It seems like the only people who aren’t thinking are the people who can change the rule.

If a runner breaks the plain then it’s a touchdown, whether they fumble afterwards isn’t relevant. Why can’t receivers have the same criteria? Why do receivers have to jump through extra hoops? The ball crossed the goal line, that was a touchdown.

Now the NFL has set the Patriots up nicely and the anti-Patriot crowd has a new chapter in the never ending book on how New England always comes out on top.

Get it together, NFL

3rd Down

The Seahawks got destroyed at home against the Rams to the tune of 42-7. The Hawks are missing a lot of key pieces but playing at home is usually the remedy. After the beatdown All-Pro safety Earl Thomas said that teammate Bobby Wagner shouldn’t have been playing on an injured hamstring and that his backup would have done just as well.

Wagner, in a now deleted tweet, fired back.

What makes Seattle so unique is how they handle so many outspoken personalities. The problem? That same uniqueness will be their downfall. The Seahawks are entering a transition mode and the Legion of Boom may be coming to an end. Richard Sherman is almost 30, Kam Chancellor‘s neck injury might be career ending, and Earl Thomas will most likely be looking for a raise with a team that doesn’t have money to give.

All good things must come to an end, I suppose.

4th Down

Marvin Lewis has been on the hot seat for the past five years. Sunday before kickoff a report came out that Lewis would be leaving the Bengals at the end of the season. After getting their tails handed to them against the Vikings Lewis claimed that those reports are false and he has no plans on leaving.

C’mon, Marvin. We aren’t stupid.

This is a classic high school breakup. Person 1 hears that their partner is going to leave them so they beat them to the punch and break up with them first. Once the word gets out Person 1 acts confused. Person 2 confronts Person 1 and they get hit with the “it’s not you, it’s me,” spiel.

George Costanza gave us the blueprint years ago.

Extra Point

The Derek Carr fumble play highlights another dumb rule that needs to be scratched. The 49ers have won three straight and I don’t know if that’s a good thing. Hearing people talk about AB playing after tearing his calf is a testament to how strong these players really are.

Dope moment of the week goes to Teddy and the Vikings.
