The High Heat: Best DFS Pitchers

Welcome to The High Heat. Picking the correct starting pitcher is crucial to success in daily fantasy baseball. The goal of this column is to help guide you towards making the right choices when deciding on pitchers in your lineups. I have organized recommended pitcher plays in tiers based off their respective salaries on DraftKings and FanDuel. Many components are taken into consideration in making these recommendations, including the Vegas over/under, teams favored, the pitcher’s statistics, and the opposition. The goal is to provide information which will make your decisions easier when setting your lineups. Note: tiers are broken up by prices.

Elite Tier

Gerrit Cole vs. Chicago Cubs ($8,800 DK, $8,800 FD).

O/U n/a, Pittsburgh -117.

Cole is one of my favorite targets tonight if I’m not paying up for Felix Hernandez. Cole offers upside close to what Hernandez does at a discount. The Cubs batters are currently eighth in the league in strikeouts and the offense has been average at best this season. Cole has been pitching quite well in 2015, racking up 9.95 strikeouts per nine innings and a 2.19 ERA/2.33 FIP. Expect him to be able to limit the Cubs offense and be in the mix for a win tonight.

Mid Tier

Alex Wood vs. Washington Nationals ($8,400 DK, $7,800 FD).

O/U 7.0, Washington -116.

Outside of last night’s offensive explosion, the Nationals have been a very favorable team to target with opposing pitchers. Add in the fact that Washington hitters strike out frequently and Wood is an excellent fantasy option tonight. He hasn’t been striking out batters with the frequency that he did last season, but he should be able to make up for that tonight.
