Make room for Antonio Gibson, the next Fantasy Stud

You are on the clock in later rounds of your fantasy draft and you decide to pass on running back Antonio Gibson and instead select a Tarik Cohen or a Matt Breida.

But how were you supposed to know that Adrian Peterson and Derrius Guice were going to get released, Bryce Love still failing to make an appearance since being drafted, and that the third-round selection by Washington Football Team in the 2020 NFL Draft would leapfrog veterans Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic.

Gibson draws plenty of talk in the hope that he can produce Christian McCaffrey-like numbers and rightfully so. His offensive coordinator, Scott Turner, was the former OC with the Panthers and was directly involved in ensuring the offense revolves around the running backs.

Head Coach Ron Rivera’s response when asked about Gibson in comparison to McCaffrey, “No, that’s fair. He’s a little bit bigger than Christian, but he’s got a skill-set like Christian.” And who would know better? Maybe only Turner himself, and the staff has every intention to involve Gibson more as the season pushes forward.

And just as we thought it could not get even better for the rookie, Washington has benched Dwayne Haskins and is moving on to Kyle Allen, who was acquired to rejoin the coaching staff from the Panthers. Allen, if you remember, was the starting quarterback for 12 games last year that contributed to McCaffrey’s unbelievable and historical fantasy football season.

Gibson Moving Forward

This may be very bold, but he is a player that as long as he continues to keep the trust of the coaching staff, is very capable of having a top 12 finish among running backs.

In his last game, he finally broke the 15-touch threshold and made the most of his opportunities. He had 13 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. He also added four catches and 82 yards. And this was against the Baltimore Ravens, who a week ago played the Kansas City Chiefs’ running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and gave up fewer PPR points to him on eight more touches.

Gibson’s stock is rising and today may be the cheapest you can get him moving forward, whether it’s through a trade or if you are in one of the 12% of leagues that he is not rostered, in which you should immediately head to waivers and claim him.

He is also a candidate you can sell high in the coming weeks if you have depth at running back and need help at other positions on your roster.

Be Warned

Though his season outlook is very bright, some things to keep in mind are the fact that he is on the Washington Football Team and they could be trailing most of the season which can be a problem for non-PPR leagues.

Another caution to consider would be the fact that McKissic continues to get touches limiting the potential ceiling of Gibson, but the coaching staff is realizing that the offense flows much better when it is going through Gibson.
