Mock Draft Series: 1QB Dynasty- Rookie Targets

Welcome back to the Mock Draft Series. We have covered a rookie only dynasty mock and a mock slotting the rookies into a startup league, both Superflex. While I highly prefer superflex format, a majority of leagues still operated under a 1QB system. So this part in the series will be sliding in the rookies into a startup draft, 1 QB league, and comparing where they are going as of the middle of May.

These are based on a 12 team league, PPR scoring. The roster composition is 1 QB, 2 RB’s, 3 WR’s, 1 TE, and 1 Flex with 10 bench spots. For a total of 18 rounds to be analyzed. As always, if you have ideas for other mocks, feel free to send me a message on twitter (@HodgesHotTakes).

Rounds 1-3

Just like in superflex, only two players are worthy of premium draft capital. I still expect Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jonathan Taylor to come off the board around pick 24. CEH gets the nod for better system and perceived playing time but JT is a fine consolation prize as I expect him to grab the starting job out of camp.

Rounds 4-6

This is where you will see dramatic shifts from the superflex mock. J.K. Dobbins, D’Andre Swift and Cam Akers will all garner attention beginning in round 4. Ke’Shawn Vaughn jumps up a tier in 1QB leagues and will be going off the board around the 5-6 turn.

Round 4 will truly be the round of the rookies with 2 from the WR class expected to come off the board. CeeDee Lamb and Jerry Jeudy go around earlier in 1QB leagues. Jalon Reagor, Justin Jefferson, and Henry Ruggs see a huge leap, going from round 8 in Superflex to firmly in play in round 5 and steals if they make it to round 6.

Rounds 7-9

This tier looks completely different in the superflex mock. If you couldn’t guess by now, the quarterback position takes a dramatic hit in 1QB leagues and the other skill position players start going at a premium. Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, and Denzel Mims are your targets around the end of round 8.

Rounds 10-12

Zack Moss still lands in this tier but is now an early round 10 grab if we are being reasonable. If you truly covet him, it might cost that late round 9 pick, be warned.  After Moss, we come to the RB landscape with no clear path to immediate contribution. Sure things can change, but for now A.J. Dillon and Antonio Gibson look more like longer term stashes and will go off the board towards the end of round 11.

Also going at the beginning of round 10 will be the remaining WR’s taken in first two rounds of the NFL draft in Brandon Aiyuk and Laviska Shenault. That completes the premium draft picks at the WR position and the rest will be dipping down into the speculative range. The first two to come off the board will be Bryan Edwards and Chase Claypool and I expect them to be gone by the end of round 12.

Rounds 13-15

Finally, we end the QB slide! It’s crazy the difference between only starting 1 QB or potential for playing two. Which is why I prefer superflex leagues, the most important player in real football is QB so they should be treated similarly in fantasy football. Both Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa will go at the beginning of round 13 as nice investments in 1 QB leagues.

Anthony McFarland and Darrynton Evans are the next tier of RB’s to go off the board during round 14. While they might have lucky bounces and contribute in 2020, they are more speculative adds because their 2021 situation could drastically improve if James Conner or Derrick Henry leave via free agency.

K.J. Hamler is the only WR I have going in this range and will probably come off the board somewhere in the middle of round 15.

Rounds 16-18

This is where it gets fun as a rush of prospects come off the board in the last tier of my mock. In round 16, you will see the likes of Van Jefferson, DeeJay Dallas, and Antonio Gandy-Golden come off the board. In round 17, I am comfortable targeting Devin Duvernay and Lynn Bowden Jr. Finally, in the last round of this mock draft you can target La’Mical Perine, Eno Benjamin, KJ Hill, and (last but not least) Justin Herbert to round out your squad.

Once again, no TE’s make the cut as they simply are not promising prospects at this point.

I will be mulling over a few more dynasty mock scenarios for the series before turning back to re-draft leagues as we grow closer to training camp/
