Matt Corral QB, Ole Miss 6’1″ 205lb.

Strengths

  • Athleticism and mobility outside of pocket

  • Arm-strength and accuracy to receivers
  • Competitiveness

Weaknesses

  • Size (frame, bulk)
  • Inconsistency when outside the pocket
  • Ball Protection

NFL Player Comparison | Dak Prescott

Though Corral could be likened to Mahomes and Jackson as more mobile QBs in the league currently, he is lacking some of their traits. He reminds me more of Dak as a polished but room to grow type of player. Both played in the SEC in Mississippi, and both are shorter QBs, though Dak has more bulk on him.

Both are born leaders who had theirs ups and downs in college but prevailed and led their teams to unprecedented seasons. Both have the ability to call the game at the line of scrimmage and get the ball out quickly.

They love to scramble and have quick snap-to-throw times. Most might hate this comparison as there are many Dak doubters out there, but let me tell you, Corral will come out slinging. He might spend one year behind a current QB but will be making an immediate impact wherever he lands.

Summary

Hotty Toddy! As an Ole Miss alumni, I might be partial to Corral entering the 2022 draft, but he is worth it and given the right RPO scheme team, he will flourish. Granted, he needs to bulk up and continue to do better at protecting the ball (had 14 interceptions in 2020 to 5 in 2021), but his number one upsale is his leadership.

Matt was the bonafide leader on and off the field in Oxford. He led the team with charisma, strength, honesty, integrity, and communication. He pushed everyone around him to be better, and that is what great players before him like Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers did for years. In the last two seasons as the starting QB for Rebels, he had a 69.2% passing completion rate with 49 touchdowns.

So no doubt, he can throw and is wicked accurate to receivers and allows them room for yards after the catch. One issue because of his RPO abilities, he tends to scramble often, and then the passing isn’t as accurate as say Mahomes. Though he does get it out quickly and does not get sacked as often one might think, but this was all at the collegiate level. The NFL is much tougher. So, Corral needs a coach that can teach him to be more meticulous in his decision-making and learn to allow the plays to happen and not force them. I see him be drafted in the late 1st round to either Washington or New Orleans.

He could start immediately in Washington or in a few weeks behind Heinicke. If he becomes a Saint, I would like for him to sit one year behind Winston and progress more under new head coach Allen’s design. I predict him being the 2nd to 3rd QB off the board. I can’t wait to see this young man flourish!
