Pay Me No Mind Podcast: NFL Talk and Under Dawgs Boxing’s Eric Duran

pay-me-no-mind-logo-2This week’s Pay Me No Mind (Sports & Entertainment) podcast is guest-laden. The episode’s line-up includes GoingFor2‘s NFL writer Matthew Garrett, light heavyweight prospect Malcolm “KO King” Jones out of Indianapolis, IN, and feature guest Under Dawgs Boxing’s Eric Duran out of Denver, CO.

Matthew Garrett returns to PMNM (around the 14:00 mark) to review his NFL Week 2 installment of his Four Down Territory (FDT) column. Garrett and I discuss the grim outlook for Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, whether the teams that are falling behind may emerge as late-season contenders if they avoid the injury bug, the Seattle Seahawks’ struggles to find an identity in the absence of Marshawn Lynch, and J.J. Watt’s chances of supplanting the late Reggie White as the NFL’s all-time sack leader. Due to the timing of our discussion we take a moment to look ahead to some early candidates for Week 3’s FDT – namely Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman. Lastly, is the Battle for Wentz-ylva… err, Pennsylvania an undervalued in-state rivalry? Garrett points directly to why this Eagles-Steelers rivalry hasn’t quite taken off throughout the years.

Malcolm “KO King” Jones (starting at 53:46), a hungry and undefeated light heavyweight from Naptown, was supposed to be fighting tonight in Indianapolis. After not being able to fight, originally for the NABF light heavyweight title, Jones is no longer going to face the replacement opponent due to the entire show being cancelled. I added the segment to this week’s PMNM so that boxing fans can learn a little more about the struggles these boxers face as they try to advance their careers independently. If you’ve read up on any of the boxing articles posted on GoingFor2 you may recall the piece about Curtis Hill Jr recently winning Indiana’s light heavyweight state championship. I asked Jones – a light heavyweight himself – about Hill regarding a possible showdown and the response wasn’t exactly neighborly.

The boxing world is fraught with “healthy” conjecture, as per usual. The sport’s biggest fight Saul Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin will not happen before the end of 2016. Eric Duran joins the show (near the 1:10 mark)to discuss how the fight is going to finally be brought to fruition from a promoter’s perspective. Additionally, we dig into the apparent financial woes of the Premier Boxing Champions series, and discuss whether PBC cards will resume in 2017. Some other topics include future fights for Canelo Alvarez and GGG that fans will likely see before the two finally face off in the latter part of next year. What potential developments could threaten boxing’s most anticipated match-up?
