Should Be Same Old Browns Come Draft Day

Will the Browns have their usual C grade draft, or will they surprise us all on draft day? I’m strictly talking about their awful luck drafting a QB in Rounds one to three. If I were grading the draft solely on that I’d have to give them an F. The Browns have had terrible luck drafting a starting caliber quarterback in any round, and even when they do, they don’t stick with promising players for very long. For example, I personally thought that Colt McCoy would have been a promising player for them. I know, His numbers were not great. However he showed some real poise, and talent in big games in victories against The New England Patriots, and the then defending champion New Orleans Saints his rookie year. He wasn’t supposed to play at all his rookie season. The plan was to groom him for year two. A poor offensive line made sure that wouldn’t happen. One has to think what might have been. Another quarterback who could have panned out better is Johnny Manziel, Although I don’t blame the team’s coaching staff or the poor surrounding cast on this one. Johnny Football was a media circus from day one. They were wise to cut him when they did. Then there is Brady Quinn. Brady Quinn is quite frankly not even worth writing about, other than the fact that like Manziel he was a first round pick that should have been a second rounder who played terribly.

You have to go back to the days of Bernie Kosar to remmeber a winning quarterback in brown. Bernie Kosar’s career stats weren’t very impressive, but at least the browns made the playoffs a few times. He only through 124 touchdown passes in his career to go along with 87 interceptions. He was good, and not elite. He was the Browns last good quarterback. Will they ever even have another Kosar? that remains to be seen. Trading the second pick to the Philadelphia Eagles certainly did not help. Unless Paxton Lynch is a lot better than we all think he is. (If the Browns even Draft a QB in Rd. 1) I think they should have stayed at 2, and drafted Goff or (more likely) Carson Wentz. They have a ton of draft picks, but that doesn’t always translate into getting great players. I would actually like to see the Browns in the playoffs for the first time since 2002. I just don’t see it happening. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe RG3 plays football like he did his rookie season, or better yet the Browns draft 5 QBs and 1 works. Time will tell. How much time is now Hue Jackson’s task.
