The All-Overrated Fantasy Team for 2020
Ryan Cearfoss @Foss534
Every year when the pre-season hype train starts it builds bigger and bigger until it blows players out of proportion. They increase fantasy values way overboard and help ruin fantasy seasons for all of us. With a shorter off-season and more time to debate then ever the hype is out of control for a lot of players. The question is who is the best of the best? Whose value is so out of control it’s mind-numbing? So without further ado the 2020 Goingfor2 All-Overrated team.
Quarterback Josh Allen –Buffalo Bills-QB6
Last season Josh Allen showed himself to be a premier fantasy asset at the quarterback position finishing as QB7 and is now essentially being drafted at that position at QB6. An improved receiving core helps solidify his passing game. The potential fantasy drop off for Josh Allen is the potential of losing rushing attempts specifically in the red zone where he had 21 attempts inside the 20 last year.
Last year red zone opportunities were split between him and the ageless wonder Frank Gore. While its amazing Gore is still playing his efficiency wasn’t there. Gore converted 2 of 25 attempts inside the twenty where Allen converted 9 of 21. If the new rookie Zack Moss comes in and produces efficiently in the offense, there’s a chance he could cut Allen’s red zone production in half if not more. If this happens it’s a huge dip in fantasy productions which makes his price at qb7 high.
Running Back Kenyan Drake– Arizona Cardinals-RB8
Right now Kenyan Drake is going as RB8 and it looks like a steal with the phenomenal production he had last year in Arizona from a bird’s eye view. In his 8 games in Arizona, 64% of his yards came in three games (413 of his 643 yards). By the same account, he had also had three games under 40 yards rushing, proving to have a high boom or bust potential.
At his asking price right now as potentially your teams RB1 that inconsistency of production can be devastating to a fantasy team. In games where he gets a ton of volume, it’s great for fantasy but that volume is far from guaranteed. The Cardinals offense is built to pass the football and using the short passing game as an extension of the run game. This limits volume and opportunity for Drake as well as adding questions. Drake is fine if he’s your second running back but relying on him as your RB1 is playing with fire.
Wide Receiver Chris Godwin– Tampa Bay Buccaneers-WR6
Embed from Getty ImagesDon’t get me wrong on this one, I love the talent when it comes to Chris Godwin but he is currently being drafted at his ceiling. Last, the Bucs had 630 total pass attempts due to playing from behind a lot due to turnovers. This season the Bucs have a new quarterback who is much safer with the ball. The chance of Godwin and Evans both getting a ton of targets, 121 and 118 respectively is slim. Add in Rob Gronkowski the targets slim down even more. Godwin can produce this season but there’s a good chance we already saw his ceiling in 2019
Tight End Mike Gesicki-Miami Dolphins-TE15
Do you want the perfect example of athletic testing not matching production, that’s Mike Gesicki. The Dolphins’ tight end has an unbelievable athletic profile (97th percentile SPARQ-x score), but the production has never matched. The lack of production isn’t due to a lack of opportunity either, Gesicki finished top 4th in pass plays per game. Gesicki struggled with separation, yards after the catch, and producing in the red zone. With his skillset, these are all places where he should excel but doesn’t. This is one of those cases where when things don’t match up and you can still take advantage of the hype.
