The Backup to the Best RB in this Class is Looking to Make His Mark

Roschon Johnson

Roschon Johnson

Texas Longhorns Running Back 6″2″ 223lbs.

2022 Stats: 93 Attempts 554 Yards and 5 Touchdowns
14 Receptions 128 Yards and 1 Touchdown

Pros

Versatile as a runner, receiver, and return specialist.

He is very aggressive in his running. He is a taller running back yet seems to bust through defenders with stiff arms and shifty moves.

Great running vision. He sees the field, waits for blocks, finds open holes, and moves the chains effectively.

He was a quarterback in high school, so he is knowledgeable about the playbook.

Cons

His speed is not elite by any means, but he makes up for it with his body.

Inexperience as a receiving back, but shows he can be “that guy” if given the chance.

Summary

The answer to the question if Johnson will always be a backup in my opinion is yes, but he might be utilized in a RBBC. Unfortunately for him, he was behind Bijan Robinson at Texas, and we all know the hype surrounding how great Bijan will be at the next level. The thing is that Johnson is good, his Texas career produced 2,190 yards and 23 touchdowns.

He is steady and consistent, and because he wasn’t featured as the lead back during his entire college career, he still has a lot of gas left in the tank. As a quarterback in high school, he has the knowledge and maturity to allow the play to develop and to see the field. He is a decent pass blocker, and we already know that he is able to complement other backs. So maybe he gets drafted to help an older back in the league like Henry, Chubb, or Ekeler and then becomes the starter.

Regardless, I like this kid and think he has so much potential given the right opportunity to shine. Miami would be a great fit for him as well to start out of the gates.
