What Re-signing CB Nolan Carroll Means For Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have Re-signed Nolan Carroll to a one-year deal, and this signing has major draft implications. The Eagles were desperate for defensive backs entering Free Agency. However after the additions of Leodis McKelvin, and Ron Brooks, and the Re-signing of Nolan Carroll, the need has been filled.

Two of the three previously mentioned players are solid starters. Throw in the likely to start second-year Pro Eric Rowe, and the sure to compete for playing time JaCorey Shepard, and the cornerback position is actually starting to look good for Philadelphia. I would personally take Ron Brooks over Byron Maxwell whom the Eagles were able to somehow dump off to The Miami Dolphins along with Kiko Alonso, and get overly compensated for it.

Credit Howie Roseman one more time for what might be the best trade I’ve ever seen. The biggest impact retaining Carroll is quite simple. I highly doubt The Eagles draft a CB in the first round. In fact, I (like many others) think they will use their first pick on the other side of the ball. RB Ezekiel Elliott or WR Will Fuller seem like more likely options.

I mention Fuller being an option because of his ability to threaten defenses deep. However Elliott is the second best player in the draft(After Miles Jack), and the best back to enter the NFL draft in some time. If he falls to the Eagles at No. 8 I absolutely have no doubt they’ll draft him. They can still add a corner to add depth and develop in the mid to later rounds.

I see them taking an OL with their second pick in the draft, then a developmental QB, and a WR in that order. I believe that these needs will be addressed before a CB is selected because of the Re-signing of Nolan Carroll. Safety Malcolm Jenkins, and the newly acquired hard-hitting SS Rodney McLeod will obviously both benefit greatly from good cornerback play. It will free them up to stay in their positions, and potentially form the best safety tandem in the NFL.
