2016 Fantasy Football Breakout Candidate: Alec Ogletree
LB Alec Ogletree | Los Angeles Rams | 4th Year
2015 Stats: 42 total tackles, 2.0 sacks, 0 INT
Alec Ogletree’s 2015 season lasted just four games, as a fractured fibula in Week 4 sidelined him for the season. That opened the door for Mark Barron to take over at weak-side linebacker in the Rams’ 4-3, with good results, but the release of James Laurinaitis this offseason opened up a move for Ogletree to middle linebacker.
Ogletree had a productive first two NFL seasons in 2013 and 2014, with over 100 total tackles each season along with totals of 10 forced fumbles and 21 pass breakups over that span. A move to the middle is good news for increased tackle opportunities, and playing behind Los Angeles’ top notch defensive line won’t hurt either.
Rams’ head coach Jeff Fisher has made a notable recent addition to his coaching staff, with the hiring of Mike Singletary in an advisory role. The Hall of Fame linebacker may not have an official title to reflect it at this point, but with experience coaching linebackers it’s safe to assume Singletary will work with that position group primarily.
Ogletree’s talent level is obvious, and working with Singletary should allow him to combine his physical skills with an increased level of mental acuity. That points even more toward a breakout this year, and I don’t see any lingering durability concerns to hold Ogletree back.
