2020 Dynasty Prospect Series: Darrynton Evans

Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State

Combine Results

Strengths

  • Vision — finds the cut back lanes quickly
  • Initial burst when he sees the hole
  • Long speed was a question having played at a small school, but the combine confirmed what our eyes told us
  • Elite-level Elusiveness

Weaknesses

  • Lacks the girth in pass-pro, the effort is there, however
  • Receiving skills weren’t showcased at App State, looked good on dump-offs and screens, but was never asked to run routes
  • Lacks the size of a work-horse

NFL Player Comparision | Miles Sanders (Eagles)

2020 Dynasty Rookie Draft Projection | Mid-to-Early 3rd

Bottom Line

Evans wasn’t even on my radar until the combine. Having played at a smaller school in App State, he flew under the radar…that is, until his combine. He had an elite-level 40 time and burst score, two things that I also saw on film when I went back and watched him.

He isn’t dense enough to be a workhorse running back at the next level, but we have seen plenty of ancillary running backs have fantasy success in the NFL. He has excellent vision, sets up his blocks well and will absolutely flourish on outside-zone and stretch runs. His receiving skills weren’t really showcased much, mostly check-downs and screens, but from what I saw, there is no reason to think he won’t be a good receiver out of the backfield.

His player comp was a little tough. I saw a little Maurice Jones-Drew, but he wasn’t dense enough, I saw a little Darrell Henderson and I even saw some Ray Rice. I settled on Miles Sanders — minus the Sanders jump-cut I fell in love with last year. They are similar in size; Sanders 5-11 211 and Evans 5-10 203. Evans, however, is faster and his initial burst is slightly better. Sanders has Evans beat in lateral movement, but Evans is no slouch either, Sanders is just elite.

All-in-all, I really liked what I saw in Evans on film and at the combine. His next big test will be draft capital. If he is drafted in the third or fourth round to a good situation, I’ll move him up my draft board for dynasty. Anything after the fourth round and he will fall from where I have him ranked currently.
