….And the Odds Are (Week 5 Picks)

Week 5 of the NFL is here, and there are some juicy matchups to look at this week. This will be my first attempt at picking games in the form of an advice column. I’ll keep track of my record from week-to-week. Let’s get started with NFL Betting for Week 5

Arizona Cardinals @ Philadelphia Eagles (-6.5)

The Cardinals are not a great road team when they travel east in 1 pm games. They are 2-and-6 since 2015 in 1 pm east coast games, including a loss at Detroit and a narrow victory over a bad Colts team in Indianapolis this season. The Eagles have scored at least 26 points in every game this season while the Cardinals have yet to score more than 23 in a game.  I’m taking the Eagles to cover the 6.5 points at home this weekend. Pick: Eagles

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Pittsburg Steelers (-8.5)

Ben Roethlisberger has not thrown for over 300 yards in 10 straight games dating back to last season, and the entire team has struggled offensively through the first four weeks. The Jags come into Pittsburg as the 11th ranked defense overall and first against the pass. Some of that is because of their lack of competition through the first four weeks, but allowing only 147 yards per game through the air is impressive nonetheless. The way you attack this Jags defense is on the ground, which I fully expect them to do with Le’Veon Bell, and if you couple that with the Jags run-heavy offensive scheme, I don’t see a scenario in which this turns into a blowout. I expect good defense from both teams and a lot of running, which will shorten the game. The Steelers win this game, but it is much closer than the 8.5 point spread. Pick: Jaguars plus the points

Kansas City Chiefs @ Houston Texans (+1)

The Chiefs are getting no respect as a one-point favorite against a rookie QB. Yes, Deshaun Watson has looked really good this season — especially last week — but he is still a rookie and has yet to face a complete team like the Chiefs. The Chiefs play a ball control offense, as do the Texans, which could explain the spread, but the Chiefs are too good a team to be only giving one point. The speed of the Chiefs WR Tyreke Hill will on full display on the turf of NRG Stadium on Sunday. He and RB Kareem Hunt will be too much for the Texans. The Chiefs win going away. Pick: Chiefs
