Cleveland Brown’s Conundrum: Is RGIII the Answer?

Cleveland finally got it right.

That’s a statement many thought they’d never hear but it’s true. By signing RGIII Cleveland has started to pull themselves out of purgatory and on to something sustainable. Even the contract, two-years and $15 million, makes sense. If he’s atrocious this year then they can easily move on. If he plays like he did during his rookie year then he can expect a massive extension. The icing on the cake for Browns fans is the hopeful reunion between Robert and his former Baylor teammate, Josh Gordon.

The sun is shining in Cleveland. Well, on the football side at least.

Too bad this is the calm before the storm.

Reports have surfaced claiming that Browns head coach Hue Jackson was the only head coach at Carson Wentz’s pro day. Wentz is slated to be one of the, if not the, best quarterback in the draft. Scouts raved that his pro day was one of the best ever and has solidified himself as a legit NFL quarterback.

That’s great news, right Cleveland?

Wrong. Dead Wrong.

There’s no way Cleveland can draft a quarterback after signing RGIII. They’d be setting themselves up for failure. Griffin created drama when he thought Kirk Cousins, a fourth-round pick, was gaining ground on his job. Can you imagine the firestorm that will take place if the second overall pick in the draft is breathing down his neck?

By the way, RGIII was the second overall pick. It’s like he’d be facing himself, sort of.

It’ll be DC times a thousand.

Maybe Jackson thinks RGIII will be a mentor to a rookie quarterback; another awful mistake. Robert is only going to look out for himself, which he should. He’s 26 and about to enter his prime. Besides, how can Griffin be a mentor when he has so much to learn himself? He needs to have a season where there isn’t a threat to his job; a season where you can play without the fear of being benched.

Who knows, maybe all this Wentz love from Cleveland is a smokescreen to fool someone, like the Eagles, into trading up to get him. I’ll believe that when I see it. The Browns haven’t shown that they have the intellect to pull that off. They did draft Johnny Manziel because a homeless person told them it’d be a good idea.

If Cleveland is smart then they’ll draft anything else but quarterback. Joey Bosa, Jalen Ramsey, Myles Jack, and Ronnie Stanley are great names that you can draft.

With all that being said I expect Cleveland to draft a quarterback with the second pick and endure a season of drama because……well, they’re Cleveland.

As always, thanks for reading.
