2016 Fantasy Football Breakout Candidate: Matt Jones
RB Matt Jones | Washington Redskins | 2nd Year
2015 Stats: 144 carries for 490 yards, 3 TD, 19 receptions for 304 yards, 1 TD
Jones showed flashes of brilliance as a rookie in 2015, with 146 combined yards (123 rushing) and two rushing touchdowns against the Rams in Week 2 and 187 total yards (131 receiving) with a receiving touchdown against the Saints in Week 10. The free agent departure of Alfred Morris opens up the chance for Jones to take over as Washington’s clear No. 1 running back, and all indications are that is just what he will be this year.
In the 13 games Jones played last season, he had less than 50 rushing yards 10 times with just one other touchdown outside of his aforementioned two best games. Add in as many lost fumbles (four) as total touchdowns, and three games missed with hip and toe issues, and fantasy owners have reason for concern.
Jones has made a positive impression on the Redskins’ coaching staff during offseason work, including working with a special football to help with ball security issues. His passing game chops remain a question, but Washington has no real threat to take away any part of a likely three-down role for Jones.
Based purely on touch volume, and health permitting, Jones has a safe floor as a RB2/RB3 this year. But I don’t see a back with special talent, and I can’t predict a big breakout season for Jones in 2016.
2016 Projection
245 carries, 960 yards, 6 TD, 25 receptions for 130 yards
Breakout Percentage
25%
