Lucky Break in Dallas, for Dak Prescott
Did Tony Romo just lose his job as the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys? With news that Romo broke his back and likely to miss the next 6 – 10 weeks, Dak Prescott now has at least 5 weeks of the NFL season to become the Cowboys next franchise QB.
The Cowboys knew Romo was getting old and getting hurt often. They even tried to move up in the draft to get Paxton Lynch. No deal was made for Lynch so the settled for Prescott in the 4th round, and it might be the best thing that happened for them. In my QB rankings, I noted that I did not think Romo could play more than 6 games this year and it looks like I was right. I am sure the Cowboys would have liked to have given Prescott more time to develop, but it is what it is.
The injury could actually work in the favor of the Cowboys. I know it has only been preseason but Prescott has looked great, and most of the time he has played has been with the first string guys. So while I do take preseason with a grain of salt, you cannot discount what he has done. He has completed 39 of 50 pass attempts for a percentage of 78%. He has thrown for 454 yards and 5 touchdowns with zero interceptions. I do not think he will keep that pace up, but I do think it is a good indication that he has the ability to be a good QB in the NFL.
The Cowboys have a great offensive line, a top young running back, one of the best receivers in the NFL, and a tight end that has been as reliable as any player over the last decade. What is not to like about Prescott’s chances of succeeding? Not that Romo could not have done well with this group, but I think it is time to move on from Romo and his injury woes and give Prescott all of these weapons to help him thrive as a QB. This whole thing kind of reminds me of the Patriots in 2001 when their starter Drew Bledsoe got hurt and a guy named Tom Brady came in and never gave the job back. I really feel like they have nothing to lose here and I think the Cowboys should just run with this opportunity to see what Prescott can do, this just may have been a lucky break for the Cowboys (pun intended).
