Fantasy Baseball: Buy Low, Sell High

Welcome to GoingFor2’s newest article topic, “Buy Low, Sell High”. My name is Austin Montgomery and each week I will take you through a short list of players you need to hop on and get now while you still can or telling you the players you better get rid of while you can still get some good value for.

Mitch Haniger is a guy I want to buy. Haniger is currently on the 10-day DL but it likely to be out for a month or longer. He has a grade 2 oblique strain. To give you the short on what this means, The obliques are part of what most people know as the abs. There are 3 grades of strains. Grade 1 represents a slight stretching of the muscle. Grade 2 represents a slight tear of the muscle. Grade 3 represents a complete tear in the muscle. So now with this knowledge, in my opinion, he could be out a little longer than a month due to such the high-stress baseball movements has on the obliques. This news means that more people are going to fall off of Haniger but if you can take him on your roster, you should be able to get him for cheap and this guy has not stopped hitting this season. In my opinion, you got to take a chance on this guy.

Didi Gregorius is the next guy to go buy low. This guy you need to jump on fast before he gets too good to give up. After being out a month with his strained shoulder, he went on his rehab stint in AAA where he hit .444, a homer, and stole a base in 5 games. He has played two games in the majors and is sitting at a .444 batting average with 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. If he continues to stay healthy, look for him to strive in the Yankees lineup.

This last buy low is a guy who just grabbed a starting spot thanks to the unfortunate event of Adam Eaton tearing his ACL and being done for a year. Michael A. Taylor has struggled this season as he started off 2 for 21 giving him a .095 batting average. However, in his start since the injury, he was able to raise it up to a .195 by going 3 for 5 hitting in the second spot of this dangerous Nationals lineup. Although his numbers are currently low, if he wants to play he is going to have to produce, so I think it’s okay to take a small chance on him and buying low for a guy who could make a splash the rest of this season once he hits stride.

Noah Syndergaard. You might be thinking, “Austin you are absolutely crazy!” but this is coming down to an injury concern for me. I have a background in Athletic Training so I have a nice knowledge of sports injuries. Here’s the thing, Syndergaard is having pain in his biceps tendon. This could mean a lot of different things. It could mean that it was just irritated and inflamed. It could be a strain leaving him out for an extended period of time. Lastly, although farfetched from the information given currently, it could be a labral tear which would put Noah on the DL for the rest of the season. Syndergaard refused an MRI and has been taking medications. That’s fine and dandy until there was actually something small that was bothering him but since he refused to see the amount of damage and pitched through it, it could lead to worse things happening. Now take this advice with a grain of salt. He is a top 10 pitcher when healthy so trading him is going to take a lot for you to give him up, however, with this possibly being a long term problem, now is the time to do it.

Here comes another jaw-dropping sell high pick right now. It is Eric Thames. Thames has been an absolute beast so far this season hitting .350 with 11 HRs and 19 RBIs with 28 Runs scored. The Brewers will likely end up in last place in the NL Central Division. So I expect this offensive burst to simmer down here soon. Thames is a career .262 hitter and his most home runs came in 2011 where he hit 12 in 95 games. He did drop down to the minors and put up 3 straight seasons of 35+ home runs but this is the Major Leagues. I don’t expect this terror to continue as teams find his weaknesses and exploit them. So I think soon is the time to sell high on this guy, not necessarily right away but soon will be the time. Take some time and field multiple offers to see what you can grab.
