PMNM: The J Rock Episode

This week’s episode of the Pay Me No Mind podcast features special guest super welterweight contender Julian “J Rock” Williams (22-1-1, 14 KOs) from the City of Brotherly Love. J Rock makes his televised 2017 debut Friday, June 30th in a bout versus once-beaten Joshua Conley (14-1-1, 9 KOs) as part of the Premier Boxing Champions on Bounce telecast headlined by Robert Easter Jr’s mandatory title defense against Denis Shafikov. All the action takes place at Toledo, Ohio’s Huntington Center, and the broadcast starts at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PT.

Williams is coming off his first professional loss – a fifth round stoppage by former super welterweight champion Jermall Charlo – but he’s put that setback behind him, and he’s ready to get back to work. J Rock discusses (starting at 1:26:35) the key lesson he learned from the Charlo fight, and shares what he’s been up to during boxing’s hot start to 2017. We also got into some Williams’ interests outside of boxing.

The 2017 NBA Finals are going on right now so we discussed Game 3 (which was airing at the time of recording), and on the entertainment side we took a look at the movie that saved this year’s blockbuster season – Wonder Woman. Some great guests returned to the show to delve into this week’s other topics which included some brief Stanley Cup Finals and the upcoming HBO World Championship Boxing Pay Per View Andre Ward versus Sergey Kovalev.

BroKnowsMovies.com creator and Editor-in-Chief Eric Fetterman (@Efetterman) returned to PMNM (starting @ 36:04) to share his review of director Patty Jenkins’ record-breaking summer blockbuster Wonder Woman. At dropping off his thoughts for WW, Fetterman ventured away from the silver screen to weigh in on the hardwood, and amazingly provided an accurate point differential for Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

This week’s second slot featured Boxing.com and FightHype.com writer Caryn A. Tate (@carynatate) who made her second appearance on PMNM (starting @ 44:44) to share her thoughts on Wonder Woman, as well as to help enlighten listeners about some of the top women for fight fans to look out for in boxing. Lastly, Tate shared her analysis on the June 17th Andre Ward versus Sergey Kovalev rematch. Do yourself a favor and check out Tate’s informative Guillermo Rigondeaux piece at Boxing.com.

Cincinnati promoter Brian Hughes, head of Hughes Promotions, made his first appearance (starting at 1:05:45) on the show to talk about his Friday, July 7th Rumble at the Radisson card. Just in time for summer, RatR features 12 exciting bouts ranging from hard-hitting heavyweights down to combination-punching welterweights. Hughes runs down his action-packed line-up of boxers, as well as Hughes Promotions’ aim with its series of upcoming shows in Covington, Kentucky, which is just across the bridge from Cincinnati. Amazingly, at a month out before fight night Hughes already has 8 of the scheduled 12 bouts under contract. One interesting participant to catch in action is veteran Pennsylvania southpaw lightweight Tommy Karpency who has been in the ring with world champions Adonis Stevenson, Nathan Cleverly and Chad Dawson.
