Darrelle Revis: Free, Free Agent? (NFL)
There doesn’t seem to be a single team interested in CB Darrelle Revis, and there are roughly 6 million reasons why. After cutting him, the Jets are on the hook for his 2017 salary if he doesn’t sign with another team. No team, barring a lot of heartbreaking injuries, is going to sign Revis for 6 million dollars this season. Although I believe he can still play CB at a fairly high level, he’s on the wrong side of 32, and even The Arizona Cardinals, The Dallas Cowboys, and The Philadelphia Eagles who just drafted 2 good corners ( albeit rookie corners) aren’t desperate enough to sign Revis for anything close to what he’s used to. Would Revis (basically) sign for free?
According to NFL.com’s Greg Rosenthal, he is essentially getting paid to NOT play by the Jet’s ( Even though they cut him, and he is a free agent), he has too much pride to play for another team making only 1-to-2 million a year. He is used to making big time money, which plays a big factor. Most of the show’s “experts” agreed with Rosenthal stating that he has to much pride to play for a LaGarrette Blount type contract. (one year 1.25 million with The Eagles.) He believes he’s worth more in Greg’s opinion, and I agree that he feels that way. Only Dan Hansus thinks he will play for a smaller contract if he signs with a contender, and for pride. I also don’t think he want’s to end his career the way he left it with the Jets. Do I think he will play for less? I think he’ll have to if he want’s to play, and go out on a high note before he retires his Jersey, and heads on down to Canton.
Despite the opinions of The Around The NFL Podcast crew I think it’s still possible that a team might sign him if they are unlucky enough to go through a preseason, and training camp riddled with injuries in the secondary. It’s even possible that a team could lose a FS or SS, and try to play him there. It has been done before. The question becomes is Revis too prideful to play for a small contract, or is he too prideful to end his NFL career coming off of his worst NFL season? Time will tell.
If Revis want’s to play that badly, and he says he does then he should start letting teams know that he’s ready to play for the 6 million he’s already due, and not much else from his new team. There are 2 extra things here Revis could benefit from. 1- He get’s to play NFL Football, and potentially end his career for a 2017 playoff team. 2- He can still sign endorsement deals, and make some extra money that way. Hello, Philadelphia Cheesesteaks and Ice Cream! It would be in his best interest to do this deal with a team as soon as possible or hang up his helmet and never play In the NFL again.
I’d like to watch him play for at least one more season, even in a rotational/ mentor position if he can’t beat out rookies to start for a team. ( I personally think he can.) The question is would he play for one season for a basically free contract, and I hope the answer is yes. If Revis decides to retire instead, the NFL world will miss. ( Least I will). The NFL needs Revis Island. We just do.
Prediction: The Cowboys will sign him after a preseason injury, he’ll play well, but the rest of the defense won’t. He’ll go out on a high note or at least a solid note, however, he will miss the playoffs. A bitter sweet ending would be better (In my opinion) then to retire after a terrible 2016 season.
