Top 5 Changes The NFL Needs

The NFL Draft desperately needs a lottery system. I have never met a single NFL Football fan that is happy when their favorite team decides to tank for a high first round pick In The Draft following the season. Tanking is a serious issue in The NFL, and it needs to be eliminated. Teams throwing games on purpose is never enjoyable to watch. I believe that integrating a lottery system would make the entirety of The NFL far more competitive. Teams would have to play the best roster that they can put together. The New England Patriots would have far less of a cake walk into the playoffs every year if The Jets weren’t always tanking. Now The Bills are following suit. It must end. No Jets fan is feeling excited about their team this season. Josh McCown is their QB. They have no solid WRs to throw to due to cutting Brandon Marshall and Eric Dekker. Then they traded their best defensive player DL Sheldon Richardson to The Seattle Seahawks. They are obviously tanking on purpose so that they will get the first pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. If the NFL had a lottery system in place they would have a good defense, good WRs, and if they signed a veteran QB like Collin Kaepernick they would at least have a much better QB to throw the football to those WRs. I think every Jets fan would have preferred that strategy as opposed to gutting the team of all of the talented players they had in order to rebuild for several seasons by tanking for several seasons to get high draft picks for the next few years. Every fan wants their team to be competitive and implementing an NFL Draft Lottery before the game’s ratings plummet even further than last year would be the best way to do that.

The extra point being kicked from the 25-yard line adds no excitement to the game. Change it back, or have every team go for 2 without the extra point as an option. Was it really that much fun to watch an NFL record set for the most missed extra points on November 20th of last year for 12 missed extra points? I honestly think it was ridiculous, and remains a ridiculous rule change. I’m all for having teams go for 2, but if that’s what the NFL wants then make that an official change or just change it back. I’m getting tired of missed PTAs. It takes away from the game and is simply boring.

Stop fining players for every legal hard hit. I am all for player safety but bring back hard hitting football. Stop throwing a yellow flag every single time a player gets legally laid out. I see this flag being thrown in every single NFL game. I agree with many rule changes. Helmet to helmet should draw a flag. Obvious pass interference should draw a flag. Late hits should draw a flag. Hitting a defenseless player should draw a flag. What I’m seeing too much of are clean legal hard hits that don’t involve any of that. I’ve seen hundreds of calls where a flag is being thrown simply because a player was legally hit, and hit hard. The defensive players suffer for it with ridiculous fines of up to 850 thousand dollars. Not every player is making the same kind of money that QB Matthew Stafford is making. You have players on special teams making league minimum getting flagged for legal hits. This must be cleaned up. I really want the NFL to bring back legal hard hitting football before it becomes two hand touch.

Allow fewer commercials during the games. NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell is apparently working on this one, however, when I watched a few games during The Pre-Season, and in Thursday Nights Matchup Where the Kansas City Chiefs surprised me with their dominant victory over the New England Patriots I didn’t notice a change. When I’m watching my team play I don’t want to watch commercials about cars I can’t afford, and beer I don’t drink. I just want to watch my football game. I don’t want my time wasted by thirty commercials during my game. I don’t think any NFL fan wants that.

Hire better Referees. It seems like in every game The NFL’s Referees are throwing 30 plus flags. They need to let ticky tacky plays go and allow teams to simply play some football. There are games where both teams deserve the penalties that they get, but it seems to me personally like The Refs are throwing flags for the smallest of reasons these days. It slows the game down which is never a good thing. I love watching NFL Football, but even I don’t want to watch an extra hour per game due to flags being thrown all over the field for phantom reasons. I am excited that the NFL finally has full-time referees. Will full-time refs necessarily be better refs? Will that be enough to finally let teams play the game without a pass interference call when a CB hasn’t made contact with a WR, and the Offensive lineman is being called for a hold that wasn’t even close to being the correct call? Time will tell.
