Fantasy Football Week 2 Streamers: QB, TE, Team Defense

Week 1 of the 2017 NFL season is in the books, and now we as fantasy football owners have to shift to Week 2 trying to build on or put a season-opening result in the rearview mirror.

Here are your Week 2 quarterback, tight end and team defense streamers.

Quarterback: Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams vs. Washington Redskins

Turns out all Goff needed to succeed, at least for a week, was better pass protection and a coach with an offensive acumen. He went 21-for-29 for 306 yards and a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts last week, and while the matchup has to be considered Week 2 brings a favorable situation too.

The Washington Redskins allowed 307 passing yards and two touchdowns (with an interception) to Carson Wentz in Week 1. While 58 yards of that and a touchdown came on an extended play in the pocket by Wentz, the Redskins were still pretty vulnerable on the back end overall.

Until he has a few more good performances, Goff won’t be part of any realistic start-sit decisions. But as a streaming option for Week 2, in another home game, he’s a fine choice.

Others To Consider: Sam Bradford, Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steelers; Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles; Blake Bortles vs. Tennessee Titans; Mike Glennon, Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tight End: Coby Fleener, New Orleans Saints vs. New England Patriots

Even with four straight 50-plus catch seasons, Fleener has offered fantasy owners multiple years of frustration. But he looked liked the Saints’ best offensive player in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings, with five catches (on six targets) for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Now the Saints get the New England Patriots in Week 2. Playing against Travis Kelce in Week 1 skews their stats against tight ends some, but the Chiefs’ tight end that caught a touchdown was Demetrius Harris.

Willie Snead’s suspension has two more games left on it, so Fleener’s role is stable at least for that long. It should be a high-scoring game Sunday afternoon, and Fleener is an easy piece of the Saints’ offense for fantasy owners to obtain for Week 2.

Others To Consider: Austin Hooper, Atlanta Falcons vs. Green Bay Packers; Cameron Brate, Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Chicago Bears; Charles Clay, Buffalo Bills at Carolina Panthers

Team Defense: Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets

It’s hard to go wrong targeting whoever plays the Jets for a streaming defense each week, and the Buffalo Bills delivered 10 fantasy points (ESPN scoring) against them in Week 1. The Raiders get their turn in Week 2, as they come off a solid but not great fantasy defensive effort in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans (16 points allowed, one sack).

The Jets are sure to provide multiple turnover opportunities to the Raiders’ defense, and it’s surprising the Bills only had one sack themselves last week. But if Oakland jumps out to a nice lead as the clearly superior team, Josh McCown will have to throw the ball a lot again (39 attempts in Week 1) and any attempt at run-pass balance will go away quickly for the Jets’ offense.

If and when things go downhill for Jets on Sunday, an avalanche of sacks and turnovers may follow. The Raiders’ defense has a solid floor even without those possibilities, and fantastic upside to exploit this week.
