Four Down Territory: Week 2

Two weeks in and the NFL is already littered  with story-lines and controversy. Let’s see what headlines are leading after week two.

1st Down: There’s nothing stronger than a brother’s love. That’s the only way to explain Rex Ryan firing Greg Roman after his offense scored 31 points against the Jets while his brother’s defense gave up 37 points. I get it, Thanksgiving and Christmas would be really awkward after firing your brother, Rob. On the other hand, hiring your brother after he just in charge of the worst defense the NFL has ever wasn’t smart. Rob better be grateful that Rex has a soft spot for him.

2nd Down: Every year injuries play a part in how the season is shaped but this year seems especially plagued. This weekend we saw Adrian Peterson, Jimmy Garoppolo, Josh McCown, Carl Nassib, Jay Cutler, and half of the Bears roster go down, among many others. Jonathan Stewart and Doug Martin join Gronk on the hamstring injury list and Arian Foster‘s groin just won’t give him a break. Teams that win it all usually have a lucky break in the health department and this year will be no different.

3rd Down: You truly don’t miss someone until they’re gone. That’s gotta be the motto in Seattle right now. Without Marshawn Lynch the Hawks offense has only scored 15 points this year. The Legion of Boom is still keeping their end of the bargain but Russell Wilson‘s offensive line hasn’t been doing him any favors. Wilson was able to mask their flaws with his mobility but with a sprained ankle he suffered last week it’s obvious that the Seahawks QB is in trouble. It’s going to take a lot of work to turn things around.

4th Down: Let’s take a moment to honor the most American man in the NFL. J.J. Watt became the second faster player to 75 sacks this past weekend. He only trails the late, great Reggie White. Watt’s dominance is truly something to behold and it’s nice to finally see him on a competitive team. Will Houston play the first home Super Bowl ever? Only time will tell.

Extra Tidbits: The NFL started streaming Thursday Nights Games on Twitter and it was magnificent. Hate all you want but you gotta respect that Cam Newton will wear anything. The LA crowd booed LeBron James this weekend while he attended the Rams game. You better respect greatness, LA. You won’t see it for a long time. Shoutout to U.S. Bank Stadium for the Prince tribute Sunday night; there’s no such thing as honoring him too much.

Countdown: 21 more weeks of football!
