Four Down Territory: Week 5

Week five has come to a close so that means another installment of 4DT. A lot of action happened this week. Let’s start the drive.

1st Down: Atlanta has officially put themselves in the conversation of official Super Bowl contenders. This weekend they waltzed into Mile High Stadium and handed the Broncos their first loss of the year. I know Paxton Lynch made his first start but that historic defense is still active. Tevin Coleman made a lot of noise in the receiving game to the tune of 4 catches for 132 yards and one touchdown. The Falcons may have the most lethal offense in the entire league. They rank first in points, total yardage, passing yardage, and seventh in rushing yardage. The problem? We’ve seen Matt Ryan and company put up gaudy numbers before only to fizzle out at the end of the year.

2nd Down: The football Gods are smiling down on the Dallas Cowboys. After losing week one to the Giants the Cowboys has ripped off four straight behind their rookie duo Dak and Zeke. They lead the league in rushing and Elliott is well on his way to breaking Eric Dickerson‘s rookie rushing record (which I predicted earlier this year). Their defense has improved and Dallas is in first place in the NFC East. They return to Green Bay this Sunday then face Philadelphia after a week 7 bye. Jerry Jones has already claimed the Tony Romo will be the starter when he’s one-hundred percent healthy. The question is, do you stick with the hot hand or put the veteran back in?

3rd Down: At what point does the NFL force San Diego to cut Rivers loose? The 1-4 Charges have blown three fourth quarter leads this season and are on the verge of imploding. Coach Mike McCoy’s job is at stake and the team has other problems, like where they’re going to reside, to deal with. Ownership is completely clueless and handled the Joey Bosa situation about as bad as one can imagine. Rivers has been one of the best quarterbacks of his generation but has had the misfortune of playing for a franchise that wasted his prime. It’s time to do right by Philip and trade him. Now we see why Eli refused to go there in 2004.

4th Down: Frank Gore passed Jim Brown for ninth Sunday on the all time rushing list. The 33 year old achieved quite the accomplishment given that running backs usually decline after they hit 30. During his twelve year career Gore has rushed for over 1,000 yards eight times. He might not be the flashiest back but his durability speaks volumes.

Extra Tidbits: Jason Witten might be old but he’s still handing out fades. What could have been if the Rams and Eagles knew that Sam Bradford needs a historic defense to look like a good quarterback. If Perriman makes that catch then Marc Trestman would still have a job. A game of inches.
