NFL 2020 Week 12: R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Week 12 isn’t in the books because well the Baltimore Ravens will play the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday night. Hey…wasn’t this game scheduled for Thanksgiving extravaganza? And then wasn’t it postponed to Sunday? Yes, and now it is Tuesday, because well J.K.Dobbins, Mark Ingram and Lamar Jackson either have Covid or been close to someone with Covid and so the NFL decided to postpone the game. Oh! Huh? Weird.

Which brings us to the word of the week…RESPECT sing it like Aretha Franklin.

I was going to go on about Tennessee Titans wide receiver, Corey Davis who played one day after his big brother Titus died from cancer.

E

Or New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis who played while his 15-month old daughter Carly-Faith battled with eye cancer.  She is now cancer free and has a prosthetic eye.

S

How about the fact that the Washington Football Team’s head coach Ron Rivera completing his final round of cancer treatment, in this ongoing season?

BUT LET’S BE HONEST

It is going on Week 13 in the fantasy football community and what we really care about is…what happened in Week 12.

PECT

The Denver Broncos played the New Orleans Saints Sunday, as scheduled.  This game went on even though all four of the Broncos’ quarterbacks were unable to play.  They violated policy, no doubt by being in contact with Jeff Driskel who tested positive.

According to ESPN, the Broncos asked the NFL to move the game to Monday so that the quarterbacks not named Driskel, Drew Lock, Brett Rypien and Blake Bortles, who by the way all tested negative, including their Saturday test could play.  Denied.  The NFL thought their brand would be better served by putting practice squad wide receiver/quarterback Kendall Hinton on the field.

Whoever made this decision for the NFL messed up, no doubt.  They put a product on the field that wasn’t quality (through no fault of Hinton’s) and showed an obscene amount of favoritism, hubris and disregard for not only the consumers of their product…but the players on the field.

Yes, the Broncos quarterbacks disregarded Covid protocol by not wearing mask, and not following social distancing.  But, if I remember correctly the Titans did not follow protocol during their Covid outbreak and their games ( and peripheral games were postponed…moved…altered to fit the NFL reality).

Fortunately, as in most cases with the NFL someone rose above it.

KENDALL HINTON

Hinton was in the Broncos training camp.  He was waived when rosters went to 53 players.  His first appearance on an NFL field was Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints.  He was on the field for 24 of the 43 offensive snaps.  He finished 1-of-9, for 13 yards and two interceptions.

Kendall got the call Saturday afternoon.  The call saying you are going from practice squad to being under center for the Week 12 game.  You, who haven’t taken a practice rep at quarterback, haven’t been in the quarterback room, in less than 24 hours will be the Denver Broncos starting quarterback.  And he did.  So regardless of the outcome of the game…and it doesn’t matter who your team is…Hinton demands respect.  From the Broncos, from the Saints, from the NFL and especially from us…the consumers.  As Cam Jordan said, “…worst-case scenario where you don’t have any one of your three quarterbacks up.  And yet, you still have to try and attack a team’s defense.  Yeah, that’s ultimate respect.”

It’s 2020.  We are all tired.  We are all fed up.  But let’s remember as this year comes to a close, not only to be aware that fantasy football is a game we play to stay connected to cheer and yeah sometimes jeer, but within all that, there are real actual people going out there…playing…doing their best.  Respect that.

My rant is over and now I am back to trying desperately make the fantasy playoffs in a league where I have lost the last three weeks!  AUGH…so Week 13 it’s ON!

Good Luck everyone!!
