NFL DFS Week 5 DFS Spade or Fade? (FanDuel & Draftkings)
Welcome to Week 5! This is Spade or Fade for Daily Fantasy. We examine two players that we are endorsing as good plays to include in your lineup. We also give you two players that should be bypassed in favor of a player that has a better matchup for the week. (All player prices are DraftKing prices)
SPADE
Derek Carr QB OAK
With all the negative attention the Oakland Raiders received starting the season without a win in three games, Week 4 will be viewed as a positive turning point that could possibly turn their fortunes around. Quarterback Derek Carr leads the way connecting 35 times on a whopping 58 pass attempts for a hefty 437 yards passing in a 45-42, nail-biting, overtime win over the Cleveland Browns. The Browns defense is regarded as a good unit but Carr and running back Marshawn Lynch came through in a big way. Even though this was a plus performance from Carr he will need to limit the turnovers going forward. He sports an underwhelming 6:7 touchdown:interception ratio on the season. The Raiders should follow a game script that features plenty of beast mode(Lynch) who appears to have lots left in the tank. This will keep defenses honest and will open things up for the pass-happy Raiders. For week 5 the Raiders will draw a favorable matchup as they visit the LA Chargers. The Chargers rank 21st in pass defense and 17th in rush defense. Overall they are giving up 28.5 pts per game ranking them 27th in the league. The Chargers are coming off a game in which they gave up 27 points to the C.J.Beathard led San Francisco 49ERS. This is a good spot for Carr and the Raiders. As of Wednesday, the Raiders/Chargers contest is listed as the 2nd highest implied combined team total at 53.5
FADE
Tyreek Hill WR KC
The Kansas City Chiefs are the most exciting team in football. They feature an explosive offense that likes to stretch the field. To date, they haven’t met their match with wins against weak defenses in the Chargers, Steelers, 9ERS and to a lesser extent, most recently, Broncos. The pace they are on is extremely impressive and quarterback Patrick Mahomes has yet to throw an interception. Onto Week 5, the Chiefs draw the number one ranked defense and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jags secondary are unlike anything the Chiefs and super-burner wideout Tyreek Hill have seen this season. They are only giving up 164 passing yards per game. We know the Jaguars defense will be ready for this one as their reputation as the league’s top defense will be put to the test. Hill has been unleashed this season and has had no trouble carving out big plays, in this matchup, however, Hill will be covered by all-world corners Jaylen Ramsey and A.J.Bouye. $6,900 seems to be appropriate for Hill but we have to respect the elite Jags defense here. No sense of playing Hill in this spot, plenty of other great options at this price range with better matchups.
SPADEĀ
Calvin Ridley WR ATL
Despite only having one win this season the Atlanta Falcons offense is running hot right now. With a very favorable matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, there is no sense of moving off of them this week. It’s no surprise that this game has the highest combined total for the week at 57.5. The Steelers defense has been pretty bad ranking 29th against the pass and 30th overall in yards against. It’s hard to imagine the Falcons not moving the ball easily and effectively in this one. Wide receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley should benefit in this plus matchup. At only $5,800 it’s difficult to not include Ridley in your lineup. Jones is so much more expensive, he is listed at $8,500. Ridley and quarterback Matt Ryan have built up a great chemistry hooking up for six scores already. Jones, who has had a great start as well, has yet to find the end zone. Julio might be the better, safer play but the price savings in going with Ridley is too good to pass up.
FADE
Jarvis Landry WR CLE
The Baltimore Ravens defense will get even better for Week 5 with the return of corner Jimmy Smith. This was already a tough matchup for Jarvis Landry and the Cleveland Browns, now with the return of Smith, they will be in even tougher. In Week 4 Landry made only four catches on 10 targets thrown his way in the 45-42 O.T. loss to the Raiders. Landry will draw a much tougher defense, the number two ranked Ravens. At $6,800 which is where Landry is at, you can find players, (some at cheaper prices), Golden Tate, Robert Woods, Cooper Kuppa and Amari Cooper.
