NFL: The RGIII Sweepstakes
The RGIII Sweepstakes
When the Redskins sold the entire farm to draft Robert Griffin III back in 2012 it seemed like a match made in heaven. After his phenomenal rookie campaign, the young QB out of Baylor was primed for a superstar career.
That is, until that fateful game against the Seahawks on January 6, 2013. We all remember seeing his knee snap and him lying lifeless on that awful grass known as FedEx Field.
After a few rough, controversial seasons the Redskins have decided to move on from RGIII. President Bruce Allen acknowledged that Robert would be released.
Now he’s a free agent and can sign wherever his heart desires. If you’re reading this, Robert, let me help you out by giving you a few teams to consider.
Philadelphia Eagles
There are few sweeter moments in life than sticking it to your ex. If RGIII is out for revenge then a short trip up 95 will suffice. The Eagles traded McNabb to the Redskins and now it’s time for this story to come full circle. The Eagles are in desperate need of a franchise QB and Robert may fit the bill. RGIII would have a chance to revive his career with a young team in the same division he’s been in since he’s entered the league.
Cleveland Browns
New coach Hue Jackson’s offense turned Andy Dalton into the red rifle. Just imagine the possibilities with a more skilled QB at the helm. Cleveland has been in football purgatory for decades because of management and QB problems. For proof look no further than the Johnny Manziel saga. The Browns are the butt of a lot of jokes (as they should be) but this roster isn’t completely empty. They have the best left tackle in the game with Joe Thomas and Josh Gordon should be reinstated soon. Adding RGIII could start to turn things around for the Browns.

San Francisco 49ers
I know the team came out and said that they plan on keeping Kaepernick for the 2016-17 season but, as an Eagles fan, if I know one thing it’s that Chip Kelly can turn a roster over faster than a three-and-out in his “revolutionary offense.” The 49ers are a little bare on both sides of the ball but maybe RGIII can provide the spark for Chip’s offense that was missing in Philadelphia.
New York Jets
This one is a little interesting. Yes, the Jets have Fitzpatrick and he did a fine job last season. The only problem is that Fitzpatrick is a little long in the tooth at the age of 33. This is a great opportunity for the Jets to upgrade the most important position in sports without spending a draft pick and years of development. The Jets already have a championship caliber defense so RGIII doesn’t need to come in as superman. Having Brandon Marshall as a go-to receiver makes life a lot easier, too.
Houston Texans
This makes too much sense.
The Texans have everything you need to contend. The team went 9-7 last year with below average quarterback play. Imagine the results if they even had an average RGIII. The Colts have dominated the AFC South for years but the Texans are hot on their heels. If Houston wants to usurp the Colts once and for all then signing RGIII is the way to go. If I’m GM Rick Smith this is how my conversation with RGII would go.
Smith: “Hello, Robert?”
RGIII: “Yes, who’s this?”
Smith: “Rick Smith, Houston Texans. We want you. I’m sending a blank check.”
RGIII: “Sounds good, see you soon.”
You’re welcome, Robert. I just made life a lot easier for you. If you want to thank me in the form of compensation then tweet me @mattgarrett41.
As always, thanks for reading.
